Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taylor Perry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Taylor, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
With being an entrepreneur, in the beginning you are bound to have to take risks. I started my hair business in 2019 and had always had a 9-5 job as my main source of income. In november of 2021 I began working for a jewelry company. It was okay at first until I kept running into different obstacles. That was not where I was meant to be. I grew more and more uncomfortable in the work space daily. They wanted me to continue to be a full time worker but my business was growing and I was finding myself not having enough time to aid my personal business. I knew that if I wanted to take my hair business to the next level I would have to take that risk of leaving my stable, guaranteed income, and betting on myself. So I did, and now I’ve been a full time hair stylist since april 2022. It is honestly the best decision I’ve made for my business.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Taylor Perry, originally from Chicago, but making my way through Nashville, Tennessee. I am a hairstylist here in Nashville that specializes in protective styling and natural hair care. I have been in the hair world since I was a kid. My oldest sister definitely has influenced my love for hair. I would watch her all the time when she would change her hair up and be so intrigued by how she even knew how to do certain things. She did my hair until I was old enough to do my own. Starting in middle school I was always so fascinated with my hair and the many different things it could do. I would dye it red or blue, or I would watch youtube videos all day long on different natural styles to try & would go to school with a different style almost everyday.
My passion for hair has been brewing since I was in elementary. It’s the freedom to express yourself through hair that keeps my passion. Being in the industry can be hard when a person is trying to build themselves up the ladder of success. But actually believing that you will get there & having that faith keeps a person open to receiving what is rightfully theirs. Any little support I appreciate. Networking and word of mouth is so important when you are providing a service. I make sure at the end of the day I am providing great customer service, a nice ambience, and a safe space for my clients to enjoy getting their service.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for me when it comes to growing my clientele would honestly be using the hashtags pertaining to my post & my business under each post I make on my instagram. That feature allows people to find your page just based off of what hashtag they may look up. Atleast half of my clientele found me that way on instagram. Also, the way that a person promotes themselves on social media has a great influence on the clientele potential. Marketing is very important. Eye catching flyers are also important, and then from there people would repost it so that it gets the exposure it needs.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
When it comes to my relationships with my clients, they come back because of how professional I am. Great customer service will always keep a customer coming back. People appreciate those that are in the industry to serve, that actually enjoy it. Another way to foster brand loyalty is to create a loyalty card system. This is a way to keep a customer coming back until they reach something like half off of a hair style or a free wash added to their service. But, this would be after their loyalty card gets a few hole punches after they’ve been back for a service a few times.
