We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Meskimen. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I grew up in a family of artists who were successful and making a living in the film and television industry. My grandmother was on the hit TV show Happy Days, and both my parents were working actors as well. When I was first beginning my career, I believed that it would be effortless for me to do the same.
I think in ways, that delusion turned out to be a positive thing in that there was never a doubt in my mind I wouldn’t make it as an artist. I had a lot of intention and ambition. But as I continued to experience life, rejection and all the ups and downs I realized that it also takes a lot of hard work and persistence to really be successful. It’s knowing what you want and then figuring out what you need to do to get there.
Taylor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an actor and musician living in Los Angeles.
Growing up I was always performing and loved the arts. I took many different classes and loved studying everything from impov and acting to painting and dancing.
When I became serious about creating my career, voice over acting was the area that started to pick up for me. I began my work as a narrator for audiobooks in 2012 and that gave me experience and a head start into this world. There weren’t a lot of people my age doing voice over at the time and I was able to really make a name for myself which has led to many fun job opportunities and allowed me continue exploring my other artistic interests and pursue a career in TV and Film. I am currently working on a short film with the amazing director Chris Merrill and look forward to sharing LA Jet with you.
In the past couple years I’ve gotten a lot more involved in music. Since 2021 I’ve been performing monthly at The Hotel Cafe for a cover night hosted by a group called The Sunday Night Revue. We cover artists such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Radiohead etc. and the experience I’ve gained with these live performances has been invaluable. This has led me to writing more original music and I’ll be releasing my first single next month on Spotify!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
It’s both a selfish and a generous goal. I love making art and challenging myself to share things and put myself out there. Pushing myself to become a better and more professional artist has been the thing that makes me feel happiest and most alive.
The other side of this goal is to inspire others to create. The artists I admire the most have ignited creativity in me, sometimes just by being good and daring with their ideas. I hope to encourage creativity in others. The world always needs more unique ideas.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Getting to share the things I make with others. I love being able to come up with an idea and turn it into something that creates some sort of change in someone’s mood or thoughts or feelings. Sometimes its even different from what I thought but when I can do that successfully that’s really rewarding.
