We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Mccoy recently and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor , appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I didn’t come up with my business idea on my own—I kind of stumbled upon it. I was about 19 years old, working at Bank of America’s corporate office. It was a great job, especially since I was the youngest one there. At the time, doing hair was just a side hustle. I learned everything from my mother, who was a master at styling short hair, especially with Marcel curls. She could do quick weaves and sew-ins effortlessly, and I naturally picked up those skills.
But as things began to shift for me in corporate America, I turned my focus more toward what I had always considered a “hobby.” Crochet braids were becoming really popular then, but there was something about the traditional technique that didn’t sit right with me. I loved the style, but I was used to seeing more natural looks, thanks to my mom. I wanted that same natural appearance with crochet braids—but how?
Like most people, I turned to YouTube University, hoping to find a solution. After searching extensively, I didn’t find anything that aligned with my vision. So, I turned to what I knew best—I prayed. I asked my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for guidance.
God, in His infinite wisdom, didn’t answer me in the way I expected. I thought He might show me a vision or dream of how to do it. But nope! Instead, He sent me a client with super curly Freetress hair, and her own hair was a bit thin. She wanted crochet braids. Did I say no? Of course not! But inside, I was nervous. Then I remembered Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” That verse gave me the courage I needed.
As I worked on her hair, something amazing happened. The knotting technique I used made it look so natural—it was better than anything I had ever seen. I realized God had answered my prayer, not through a dream, but by sending me the right people to practice on and perfect the technique He gave me. From that moment in 2014 until now, I’ve been using the same technique.
Just as I got comfortable, God threw me another curveball. I started getting booking requests from women who had alopecia. I never advertised for this, and honestly, I didn’t even know much about the condition at first. I had a serious conversation with God because I didn’t understand why He was sending these clients my way. But when I saw the women coming in with hair loss, I knew I had to help. It tugged at my heart.
So, I prayed again, asking for guidance. Soon enough, more and more clients with alopecia started coming to me. The crazy part is, they would often say they had prayed and felt led to me. Talk about the power of God! I never questioned it; I just smiled and recited Philippians 4:13 again.
By 2016, my clients started asking, “Can my hair grow back, or do I always have to cover it up?” I wanted the same answer. But after researching the market, I found nothing that could truly help. A lot of products claimed to be “natural,” but the ingredients told a different story. I was frustrated!
Once again, I went back to God, asking Him to give me something I could create with my hands. I prayed, “Lord, help me heal them. Bring back what was once dead.” And He did. He gave me a solution, but to be honest, I wasn’t sure if it would work. I had faith, though, and I knew He wouldn’t let me down because I was seeking Him instead of relying on my own understanding.
The most rewarding part of this journey wasn’t just creating solutions for my clients—it was seeing the hope and joy in their eyes. The tears, the hugs, the smiles—they were priceless. That’s when I knew this wasn’t just a business. It was a ministry, an opportunity to bring hope and love back into people’s lives. God was using me in ways I never imagined.
Taylor , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
What truly sets me apart is my passion, faith, and gratitude. This isn’t just a business for me—it’s a ministry that found me. Through prayer and devotion, God guided my steps. My work is about serving others, just as Jesus did. God blessed me with a gift I didn’t have to go to school for; it came naturally as I continued to seek Him. But the journey hasn’t been without its challenges.
In the beginning, I served women who were broken and had reached their limit—women who had lost hope. Imagine being hurt and not wanting to accept your situation, feeling guarded and unsure whether to trust anyone, but still longing for someone to help. I realized I couldn’t just approach them as a businesswoman. They needed love, patience, and understanding. I had to be there for them, just as God was there for me. Through this process, God shaped me, helping me reflect His character as I worked with these women.
I’m proud to be a child of God, using my business to bring light into the world. It’s an honor to offer hope to men, women, and children with my all-natural, organic, Holy Spirit-inspired products that restore hair for those suffering from hair loss. After 2.5 years of dedication, I’m excited to reintroduce my Healing & Restoration Growth Collection.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe the most effective way to build my reputation in the beauty industry is by creating a safe and welcoming environment for my clients. Many clients want to feel secure and not exposed while sharing their beauty journey, so it’s crucial to showcase my work in a way that inspires others to see the potential in their own struggles.
First impressions matter, and the experience from the moment they arrive until they leave is key. I don’t just go through the motions of shampooing, blow-drying, trimming, installing, and styling, then say, “Thanks for coming.” Instead, I focus on making them feel loved and welcomed. I engage with them, stepping out from behind the chair to have conversations about their hair conditions and how I can help.
This approach not only gives clients something to brag about, but it also makes them excited to return and look forward to their next appointment. That’s the kind of reputation that truly resonates.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I’d say Facebook is the best platform for me—it may sound cliché, but it’s the truth! I participate in several crochet hair groups where I share my expertise. By answering questions, engaging with members, and building my reputation, I’ve become a go-to resource in these communities. Many people tag me for advice based on my history in the group, and I’ve gained numerous clients just by interacting and chatting within these circles.
