We recently connected with Taylor Knese and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
My journey into holistic health began from a place of frustration. As a nurse practitioner practicing in traditional medicine, I felt limited, unable to offer the personalized guidance and support that I knew my patients needed. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I wasn’t actually healing anyone. Just putting a bandage on my patient’s symptoms. Every day felt like a struggle, leaving me feeling.. unfulfilled and questioning my purpose. I was also struggling with my own debilitating symptoms – chronic fatigue, digestive issues, joint pain, scalp psoriasis and overwhelming anxiety and depression. Medication after medication seemed to only worsen the situation, leaving me feeling trapped. Here I was, a medical provider that couldn’t heal herself. How was I supposed to continue to try and heal other people? But it was a moment in the shower in 2019, with my scalp bleeding from my psoriasis and tears streaming down my face, that I knew something had to change. That was the moment I said “no more, I refuse to live like this”. I realized that traditional medicine alone couldn’t offer me the healing I so desperately needed. Not even years of education in medicine could help me. So, I took matters into my own hands. Through years of dedication, countless investments, and an unwavering determination to find answers, I found my path to true healing. When I found functional medicine, I was able to finally heal my body by addressing the root causes of my symptoms. Today, I stand here completely symptom-free, medication-free, and filled with a sense of health freedom that I never thought possible. Without this “shower moment”, when I felt completely broken, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. And now, I’m on a mission to help others find their own path to healing, to break free from the limitations of traditional medicine alone, and to embrace a holistic approach that nurtures mind, body and soul.
Taylor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a military spouse, mother, holistic health practitioner and gut health expert. I worked in traditional medicine for 12 years before I decided to quit my career in medicine and start my own holistic healing business. I realized many people were facing the same challenges I had faced. Seeking answers for their chronic symptoms, trying pill after pill but never truly healing. I used to struggle with chronic digestive issues, food sensitivities, joint pain, psoriasis, high blood pressure, depression and anxiety. Once I healed myself by focusing on mindset, sleep, gut health, nutrition and detoxifying my body, I knew I couldn’t go back to caring for my patients in the same way. I couldn’t keep prescribing medications that I knew weren’t fixing the problem. The approach to healing I was offering my patients wasn’t the approach that healed me. I opened Mod Health Co. almost 2 years ago to provide the same opportunity to women who are looking for the deep healing that I have experienced. Our membership is dedicated to empowering women with the data, education, personalized guidance and community support that they need to take control of their health. We provide functional lab testing and personalized health plans that focus on lifestyle, nutrition and short-term supplement recommendations. We even have an entire educational vault that is dedicated to helping women understand their body and providing them with access to tools like yoga and meditations from the comfort of their home. Our membership was built to become a virtual center for healing and transformation. One that offers a unique, team-based approach to healing the mind, body and soul. I understand the frustration of chronic symptoms like digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, and fatigue. That’s why we provide reliable information, actionable guidance and unwavering support to help clients on their health journey. My mission is to be a lifelong partner in wellness by offering a modern, holistic approach to care that is accessible, innovative, heart centered and profoundly transformative. No more band aid fixes. I hope to bridge the gap in health, so women can navigate their health journey with confidence. I believe every woman deserves to feel heard, valued, and equipped to live her healthiest, happiest life.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Completely changing my career and pivoting from traditional medicine to functional medicine was a challenge. Opening my own health and wellness business was an even bigger challenge. Starting from scratch with no reputation or social media account is normal for any new business owner. This of course makes growing your clientele base extremely difficult in the beginning. However, there have been some powerful strategies I have used for growing my clientele. In-person networking has been great for growing my local clientele. It allows you to connect with people and showcase your knowledge. Building trust is essential for any new business owner and having a face-to-face human interaction is one of the best ways to do this. The online space has been more difficult but joining collaborative groups of other healing practitioners in the online space has allowed me to create a successful referral network that really benefits my business and my clients. By joining forces with other practitioners we have also been able to collaborate by doing workshops, summits and Instagram lives together. This allows us to get in front of each other’s audiences which has been helpful for growth on social media. Another online strategy has been just connecting with potential future clients. We are all human, having a very human experience. We are all looking to connect. By connecting with people in a genuine, authentic way, people become more interested in hearing more about what you offer. Finally, taking care of your people! Provide massive value and over deliver. This leads to positive reviews and referrals. Nothing grows a clientele base better than a quality experience and word of mouth!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back to the exact moment I chose medicine, I would absolutely choose the same profession again. Traditional medical training to be a nurse practitioner has provided me with the knowledge base that I needed to get to where I am today. It has provided me with a unique perspective that many in the health and wellness space do not share. I got into medicine to do good things for patients, the same as most other practitioners. I have seen lives saved, crises adverted and successful treatment of previously incurable diseases. I think that many practitioners in the wellness space criticize traditional medicine. This is not what I am here to do. While I do recognize the pitfalls of traditional medicine, I have seen the good that can come from both methods of care. We will always need traditional medicine for acute illness, emergencies and life-saving treatment. There is a world where both conventional and holistic medicine can co-exist. We can bridge the gap by celebrating the good in both. This is what I feel will be the new modern approach to healing. A collaborative approach to care. Without my experience in traditional medicine, I do not know that I would feel the same way.
