We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Kirsch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I remember I was in 5th grade when it really clicked for me that art was something I wanted to pursue as a career. I really had no idea how to make this dream tangible until I was in my junior your of high school however. I was very involved in the art department at our school and started entering my work into local competitions such as the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. From there on, I focused on crafting my AP art portfolio to show at various Art and Design portfolio reviews which led me to getting accepted into the Motion Design department at Ringling College of Art and Design and the rest was history.

Taylor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Absolutely, my involvement in the adverting and entertainment industry really began when I got accepted into the Motion Design department at Ringling College of Art and Design. Here, I was able to not only meet like minded peers with the same aspirations, but also converse with several talented alumni and professionals in the motion design & animation field. At Ringling, we have several networking events to meet professionals in the industry, my favorite being my departments networking event, FutureProof. Here, my department head, Ed Cheetham, brings in a variety of panelists from motion design firms, to advertising & entertainment companies, and much more. What really landed me my big break moment in the industry however was my connections to my professors whom previously worked in the field themselves. Because of their help, I was able work with some amazing teams including Nickelodeon and my current job at STARZ as a Post Production Designer. I absolutely love where my path has taken me and has been an absolute joy getting to work on a variety of movies and tv shows. It’s so cool to see your work on tv and such a joy to work with my team to creatively advertise the STARZ brand.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
This is a great question, a huge misunderstanding creatives like me face is non-creatives underestimating our profession. Iv’e been told time and time again through my creative journey that It’s a waist of money, no one can really make a sustainable career and lifestyle out of it, blah, blah, blah. It’s not true though! I think the big thing non-creatives are missing is that everything around us was made by someone. Every fast food chain logo, advertisement on tv, and every car was designed by someone. Everything around us was made out of an idea in someones mind and thats no simple task. I think the most important thing that non creatives need to remember is we are being asked to be innovative every single day. Its not just regurgitating a definition we learned in a text book, its constantly having to outdo yourself time and time again, staying up to date with trends, and making work that improves the betterment of society. Of course there are creative fields that are more difficult to make a stable living out of, most definitely, but individuals need to remember that the creative field is huge! there are so many avenues and ways to apply creativity. Not to mention, some of them pay extremely well! It’s just about finding a creative avenue that allows you to support yourself along with fulfilling your creative goal. There are ways to make living a creative lifestyle possible, many just write it off and don’t understand the extent of creative application in everyday life.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting to create work that goes beyond myself. I love creating graphics that make people feel something. Iv’e always been an empathetic person and my greatest joy is getting to see others be impacted by the work I make. All I really want to achieve in this life is making the world a little more happier and light hearted. I think the world can be a very heavy and daunting place sometimes so I feel its especially import for people to be able to turn towards various forms of entertainment to help them find a pocket of peace in their complicated lives.
