Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taylor Gulizio. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Taylor, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I think the most important thing is to believe in yourself. From personal experience most of my defeats have been due to lack of confidence. I have had many business ventures that haven’t lifted off because the first hurdle I couldn’t get over I’d give up, I didn’t believe I could do it. With this business I fully believe that I am capable of succeeding, I have found a way to believe in myself. Now when I hit a hurdle I take a minute to calm myself down and rethink my plan of action. I will keep trying different ways until I finally succeed. I believe theres only “failure” when you give up on yourself.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Taylor Gulizio and I’m the owner of ARTISTRYBYTAY LLC. I’m a New Jersey Licensed Aesthetician, MAC Pro Certified New Jersey Makeup Artist and Influencer with 13k followers on TikTok and 11k on YouTube. I have Years of Makeup experience! I decided to start my own NJ Adult Makeup Classes, Teen Makeup Classes, Makeup Certification classes, Private Certifications, Mom & Me Makeup Classes, and Private Lessons in hopes to share my techniques, tips and tricks with everyone. I also started providing NJ makeup application services and Makeup Parties/Events and much more! I got into beauty after 12 years of preparing to become a cop actually, I decided last minute to ditch the “secure” choice and go with the creative but not so secure choice. Being any kind of freelance artist never guarantees you a paycheck but I knew if i didn’t try I would regret that decision. I knew I could draw pretty well and I wondered if I could translate that into doing halloween makeup, so I grabbed my sister as my model and tried it out! Now i’ll never look back. I think what sets me apart from others is the true dedication I have for my craft and my creativity. Not only am I extremely dedicated to giving the best experience possible to my clients, but I also am a TikTok influencer so I don’t just follow the trends, I create them. I also get feedback from followers and they say my tutorials are the most detailed tutorials and the easiest to understand, which is exactly the same level of detailed my classes and lessons are and they are just as easy to understand! My main goal with being an educator is to help every student truly believe that they can confidently do their/their client’s makeup and be proud enough to show off their work to the world. My main goal for my makeup application clients is for them to feel beautiful, powerful and confident when they’re getting their makeup done by me. My goal as an influencer is to empower the world to believe in themselves, in their ability to learn, in their ability to create and in their ability to grow.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Absolutely! I started in 2020 with doing the “heatmiser/snowmiser” makeup trend, my sister suggested it. I posted it to YouTube and TikTok, that was the start. I did a lot of trends in the beginning because it was popular to do so at the time. That first trend video ended up blowing up to over a million views a few years later, out of nowhere. That was the start of my following on YouTube. With TikTok I had to get a little more creative, and thats when the real creativity started. I did a few story times while doing my makeup before they became popular and one of the series hit! I ended up gaining thousands of followers over night and amounting millions of views on the video. From there I just kept pushing out more original looks and tutorials. If I had to give advice on starting, it would be to keep your content original, be the trend setter, and most importantly no idea is not a stupid one. If you have an idea for content, post it. You never know what videos are going to gain traction!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Sure, for years on social media I worked extremely hard to gain traction. I followed every trend out there to hop on the wave to try and grow a community. It was about 2 years in with absolutely no results that I realized that I needed to change the way I was approaching how I made my content. I was on the verge of giving up but I knew that I just needed to take a breath and think long and hard about what I could do to make my content better. I realized it needed personality, it needed more realness and it needed originality. Instead of copying I needed to become what people wanted to copy. I also needed people to get to know me, the person behind the screen and to not just see the art. Shortly after changing up my strategy is when my TikTok finally took off.
