We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Gentry recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Taylor, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I’m in the middle of the biggest risk of my life. My wife and I are moving to LA to pursue our dreams in the entertainment industry. I’m uprooting everything here in Murfreesboro, TN and re-establishing my podcast in California in the hopes of growing it beyond its potential and hopefully expanding into TV.
Taylor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Taylor Gentry. I am an actor, writer, filmmaker and podcaster. As of late, I have devoted most of my energy to my radio theatre horror comedy podcast called “Count Drahoon’ Feature of Fright”.
Each episode, my vampire alter ego Count Drahoon presents a tale of “fun, fright and phenomena” or conducts an interview with a horror related guest, ie Joe Bob Briggs, Lloyd Kaufman, John Brennan, etc.
My show currently streams on Troma NOW!, the official streaming site of Troma Entertainment. I created the character Count Drahoon almost fifteen years ago. He started as a character in a short film I made in middle school and evolved into a character with his own lore.
I would say the project is a culmination of over twenty years in the entertainment business. I have been an actor since I was five, appearing in dozens of roles across thirty plays and several films. I began writing and directing in high school. I won the Best High School Film award at the 2013 Trail Dance Film Festival and have collaborated with many filmmakers and content creators in the Nashville area for years.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I am a devout Christian. I believe that the arts and story telling are passions that God has laid on my heart to pursue. I believe we live in a broken world and it is my mission to be a representative of Christ through the stories I tell.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support local artists. Buy their art. Go see their movies and plays. Subscribe to their Patreons or subscription services. This is the only way we can make art a viable career for people. There are so many creatives who are uber talented that deserve so much more support. The local guy or gal you are supporting today will remember you when they break out, and you can be apart of their rise!
