We recently connected with Taylor Denny and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
When I started my solo skin practice I was 21 years old, just laid-off from the spa I dedicated 8 months to, and had $2k to invest in my new journey!
I had 30 days to create and execute my plan. I always had the intention to be a solo esthetician, but being laid-off with such short notice was more than the ultimate push.
There are a number of things I wish I could have done differently before getting started, but most importantly would be having more confidence in myself and my professional abilities.

Taylor, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started my Esthetician journey very young; I was 18 years old and a new High School graduate! I decided to go to esthetician school because I struggled with acne that even prescription medication couldn’t remedy.
I really wanted to learn how the skin works, it’s conditions, and how to read/ select skincare formulas for particular concerns.
I absolutely fell in love with the natural side of skincare and absolutely prioritize using botanical/nature based products! I fell so deep into interpreting botanical formulations that I launched my very own serum: ‘Skin Balancing Complex.’
My serum uses the power of nature to correct moisture & lipid levels in the skin, while simultaneously reversing hyperpigmentation & sebum blockages.
I also offer unique to you ‘Mini-Volume’ eyelash extensions! Catering to the natural side of beauty. My sets prioritize lash health & safety, so only clear hypoallergenic glue is used in my studio!
My full body waxing services utilize nature based hard wax and biodegradable implements!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn my “Spa Brain.”
My clients are now able to be memorable individuals, not just the next person on the books. They are showing up for me, not the big spa name I was forced to hide my personal flare & talents behind. It’s hard being a creative person with nowhere to put your creativity!
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
If I could go back I would have went to school for the full year to be a Cosmetologist! There are services I would love to provide that I can’t as an Esthetician.
