We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taylor Danielle Greene a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor Danielle, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the best or worst investment you’ve made (either in terms of time or money)? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
The best investment I’ve made in my journey was my first major business endeavor, my salon Taylord Styles Beauty Loft. Its funny because for a period of time I actually thought it was my worst investment. Me and my dad spent A LOT of time and resources opening my first storefront salon. I hired many stylists and we serviced hundreds of clients over a span of 3 years. Aside from the cosmetology aspect, Taylord Styles Beauty Loft was also my “breakout” design project. We did our own buildout of the space and I designed it all myself from top to bottom. The main compliment we always received from our guests was how beautiful it was in there. It was true, it turned out to be a really gorgeous space. While I was disappointed that I had to close my salon, I can now look back at that time and say that it was literally the best investment made towards my personal development and my craft. Design and decor is now a lane that I’m pursuing professionally and that was definitely a moment in time that has contributed to my pursuits.
Taylor Danielle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So I am originally a hairstylist by trade. I’ve been doing hair for 13 years now here in Atlanta, GA. I eventually made a business of it & opened my own salon that was open for 3 years. In 2020 during the pandemic I had my first baby, got married, & bought a home which prompted me to slow down with working/doing hair and focus on my family. During that slower season I decided to start blogging my life, home, & experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed the creative process of decorating my home, taking photos/creating content, and blogging about my children and family life. I had always wanted to be a “stay at home mom” and fusing my love for decorating with my home family life via social media was the perfect outlet.
I believe me and my family provide a special spin on family content. We’re not just your typical “American family.” We have a story and we have talents and we share them. We’re a young, black, free thinking couple who actually works towards a complete holistic way of living and we teach our children this as well. We’re very talented, sharing our gifts in DIY home decor and building projects, cooking, homeschooling, serial entrepreneurship, gardening, raising animals, and more. I would say that it’s not a lot of family content that covers all of those areas out there. We’re here to inspire others towards this lifestyle or whatever lifestyle they desire for their own family.
I want our audience to know firstly how important and fun family is. Family is the key component of life that pushes you towards your beautiful evolution. I also want them to know that it’s ok to live a life other than what society boxes you into. You don’t have to follow the masses. You can decide your own destiny and manifest it into your reality. You don’t have to wait until you’re older to put your dreams into motion. Do it now.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I think this is an important question for me to answer at this point in my journey. I’ve been doing this for 3 years now and I’m still a “small content creator.” Social media growth has not been easy for me. I’ve went mini viral multiple times now but still haven’t seen what others would consider huge growth in my numbers. I’ve had to have this talk with myself and I want to share it with others. Don’t worry about the numbers. Yes we all want to see our efforts reflected in our numbers for income and collaboration purposes, but be mindful of your “why” of doing this line of work. If you’re in it just for the validation of numbers, this isn’t the space for you. In order to have longevity in social media you have to be in alignment with your divine purpose. And that has nothing to do with numbers. Focus on your mission and your creative energy. Have fun. When the time is right, growth will happen. Just stay consistent!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
So, I posted a cute & funny video of my children to one of my social media platforms. Me, my family, and friends thought the video was absolutely adorable and hilarious! At first when I posted it, I was getting the same reaction from others liking it & thinking the same thing. Then somewhere along the the line, some trolls came across the post and started dragging me in the comments. They literally harassed me to the point where I felt extremely uncomfortable and took the video down. I was really hurt by that situation for a while. My children are soooo important to me that I immediately got very defensive and said that I would never ever post them again. After thinking and meditating on it for some time, I dropped my defense and realized that this is just a con that comes with social media. There will always be people out there who are mean spirited & have something negative to say. But you have to continue shining your light. Instead of stopping my family blogging completely, I decided to implement certain boundaries of what I would and wouldn’t post. Now, I’m thankful for that experience because it taught me resilience where I would have normally walked away from my passion. So many people reach out to me all the time and tell me how much my family inspires them and I would be doing them and my purpose a disservice by quitting. These experiences are necessary to build your strength in difficult situations.
