We recently connected with Taylor Colvey and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When you’ve been a professional in an industry for long enough, you’ll experience moments when the entire field takes a U-Turn, an instance where the consensus completely flips upside down or where the “best practices” completely change. If you’ve experienced such a U-Turn over the course of your professional career, we’d love to hear about it.
In classic therapist trainee fashion, I’d start sessions by asking about their typical day or week.
Many students struggled with early school mornings after late nights, reported eating little more than hot Cheetos or pizza for lunch, and had no extracurricular activities to speak of. I couldn’t help but wonder—was their daily lifestyle contributing to their mental health struggles and substance use? At the time, professional limitations kept me from fully exploring this idea, but the curiosity stuck with me.
A few years later, I enrolled in an eight-week Wellness University course at a local hospital, where I deepened my understanding of the Social Determinants of Health and became Trauma-Informed.
The defining moment in my clinical counseling career—and the U-turn that shaped my future—came while working with a Dual-Enrollment College and High School program for former out-of-school youth. In the summer of 2017, on a road trip from the Pacific Northwest to San Diego, I listened to The Body Keeps the Score by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk.
That book changed everything.
I learned that trauma isn’t best treated through talk therapy alone—because simply reliving traumatic events doesn’t help people process or regulate them. Van der Kolk emphasized the power of body-based approaches like yoga, EMDR, and somatic therapies to calm the nervous system and heal trauma at its root.
That’s when it clicked: if most people were carrying both “little t” and “BIG T” trauma, and talk therapy wasn’t the best solution, I needed to pivot. I deeply respect my clinical counseling colleagues who thrive in crisis care, but I knew my place was on the front lines of prevention.
Taylor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I just wrote a blog about this! I had to learn the hard way about the battle of bacteria and fungus. Check out my blog post titled: What I Got Wrong—and Right—in 2024 and my Gut Dysbiosis Journey: https://www.lifetimehealthcoaching.com/blog/jan2025
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
Treating just the symptoms or suppressing them (ignoring them) isn’t the solution—they often come back stronger. We can’t outsmart the most intelligent systems in our world: our ecosystems and our body’s physiology. Instead, let’s work with them to restore balance and resilience. We do this by first removing what is blocking the natural expression of our health, then layering in lifestyle and dietary support to support the body’s optimal function. This is a deeply personalized and individualized process!
