We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Burns. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor , appreciate you joining us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
So, I have two launches to talk about today. I’m excited to discuss the first Blu Luna launch and a new one. So, my first Launch was in January 2015 when I was 14 years old. When I was in early elementary & early middle school, I was like my dad’s shadow. I wanted to be just like him, which inspired me to do film and digital marketing. Now, the other thing I watched both my parents do for years was make their own soap and body products. They started so my skin would heal, but it grew into so much more, which inspired me so much.
They always watched YouTube to learn new things, so I started doing the same, and that’s when I saw it. This young girl, barely older than me, makes her own skincare and cosmetic products from things like Vaseline and other items you could get at any drugstore. For a young Taylor, this was something so new and different that I went to my father and mother, excited to tell them about it. My father always made you think, ‘How can this make money?’ So when I went to him saying I wanted to do what the girl did just for fun, my father asked, “But could you sell that?” So then, at 12 years old, I began the work on Blu Luna’s first-ever product, Lip Balm.
It took three years for me to develop our first essential products, Lip Balm & Lip Scrub, but we did it. We launched in 2015 when I was 15 and have been going ever since.
Now for the new Launch. I’ve grown up and made mistakes, and just as the original Blu Luna reflected the views and life of a teenage girl, I want Blu Luna now to reflect the views and energy of an adult woman whose life is very different. So, the new Launch, scheduled for a total drop in July 2024, is set to do just that. We have already done a soft drop with a new look for our signature Fire’s Light Lipgloss collection, and we are working on revamping the look and feel of our brands and products. We plan to do a lot of teasers leading to these new releases. We aren’t just changing faces but updating some of our formulas, which we are excited about. Over the last eight years, Blu Luna has released so many new things, and after testing and figuring out what works together, we are happy to be doing a new launch.
The biggest goal for this new launch is to reflect growth and change while also sticking to Blu Luna’s message of “Let’s Be Beautiful Together.” When I started, I was a teenage girl, and now, eight years later, I’m married, a mom, and so many other things that 15-year-old me never thought about. The new Blu Luna showcases a new level of maturity for me and more things for the whole family to love, not just the women in your life.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce your brand and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Blu Luna as a brand covers two main aspects: retail and digital media production. As a retail company, we currently carry Cosmetics, Skincare, & apparel. Our products help those with sensitive skin types heal their skin and make them feel comfortable. Our cosmetics work with your skin to enhance your beauty and care for your skin simultaneously. With Blu Luna’s current skincare products, we help our customers eliminate all the lousy skin and soothe any irritation they may have. Our apparel reflects some of life’s simple joys in gaming, anime, and makeup. As for digtal media prodcuction, we cover everything from digtial marketing content to film prodcution. We as a company have stepped back from taking on clients in the last few years but we are planning to open back up our booking for small clients in 2024
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
I sell all my retail prodcuts though my website blulunainc.com! I never really had the desired to use places like Amazon or Etsy just cause they had there own set of rules and guidelines which is fine but i wanted to be able to go my own pace. I did have my etsy and my site at one point but I went i concoaldated my products and what my brand carries i let the etsy show freeze. The biggest pros of useing places like Shopify or Big Cartal or even Godaddy is that you have abit more freedom to build a site you really like and put up how ever many products your desired. I guess the con would be the price. Shopify cost the most but Big Cartal and Godaddy are pocket freadly since a Godaddy website is free with your domain purchase and Big Cartal is only $20 a month. Both are great for beginners who want a site our right but don’t want to hurt their pokects to much.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
It’s ok to have hobbies! I talk about this a bit in one of my upcomming podcast but every hobby doesn’t need to be turned in to your next great money plan. When we were kids my dad always asked us how our hobbies can make ujs money and though his lessons are something i still keep with me, this is one of the few I had to unlearn. Turning every hobby in to a income stream take the joy out of the hobby and if you take all the joys out of your life then you have nothing to turn to in times of stress.
