We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Hi Taylor, thanks for joining us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
As a forward thinking, Independent Artist and woman, I feel my message of feminine power and strong discernment against false people can often times be misconstrued as ‘Man Hate’ or Single-Hood advocacy. I sat down with one of my fellow creatives after they had heard my debut album and during the discussion they had asked me why I was so against men. I understood why my message could be taken that way so I didn’t get defensive. I sat down with another one of my creative friends and they were able to understand my message without an ounce of explanation from me. So I learned it really all comes down to whether or not someone is able to receive you. We truly have no control over how others view our work and we shouldn’t try to.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve had a deep connection to the arts for as long as I can remember. I grew up watching black and white movies and listening to oldies music becoming more inspired as the days went by. I was a Varsity Cheerleader and apart of my High school dance team to honor my passions while I was at school and it was definitely beneficial for me as an evolving creator so I highly recommend being involved in extra curricular activities for all my aspiring teens out there. After High School I attended The American Musical and Dramatic academy where I studied Musical Theatre for three years. I learned the nuisances of film, stage and television and met some amazing artists who share the same passions as me. I was able to discipline myself and really begin to discover what kind of artist I wanted to be and the kind of impact I wanted to make on the world. It was definitely hard to push through during the time I was mentally exhausted everyday and full of anxiety but my desire to be the change the world needs wouldn’t allow me to quit and I’m so thankful for every hardship. I’m extremely proud of my work, how it continues to grow and that I know exactly who I am. I’m looking forward to more collaborations and building a supportive team.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
The best way to support is to show up for your local artists! I cannot stress this enough. The same energy we put into creators we have never met we should be pouring into those around us. Everyone had to start somewhere and I just think it’s so unfortunate that society rarely wants to give artists their flowers if they haven’t or don’t blow up in a major way. If you have friends who are artists show them love, give them feedback, let them know they have what it takes and most importantly share their work!
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist to me is inspiring others and being able to instill new ways of creating. I Love expanding my horizons and the inspiration often times comes from my fellow peers. The talent I have around me is infinite, it’s impossible not to feel invigorated. I’m also proud to see when I’ve left an impact on someone and their creative ideas, that’s always an indication that I’m headed in the right direction.
