Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taylor Broen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Taylor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In 2020 I remember seeing a post that stated, “Be the girl who just went for it.” That spark was one of the factors that contributed to my idea of going into business on my own. I didn’t have a business plan; I hadn’t even envisioned myself using my cosmetology license to be a wax specialist let alone being a business owner. If someone had pitched this idea to me in high school, I would have shut it down immediately because I already planned out my career path. Fast forward to after Covid lock down was lifted, I was a fresh college graduate and decided to step out on faith and become a solo waxing practitioner. On May 8, 2020, Pure Serenity Beauty Lab was born. I went all investing my money in products, wax pots, a treatment table, cleansing supplies etc. I initially began making house call appointments with clients I had known for the past 2-3 years, then I began sharing a suite in my cousin Candace shop for 2 weeks. My plan was to wax part time and work at a local mental health facility as a case manager to gain skills and insight into my future career as a Licensed Professional Counselor. That plan was interrupted once I published a booking website and realized I could wax full time and make an adequate amount of money to cover my monthly expenses. However due to limited availability my schedule started to fill quicker than I expected. I knew I had to find my own space to rent, and quickly. The last week of May 2020 I began renting a 170 sq ft suite into Breighton Professional Building. Within the first 3 months of business every spot on my schedule was filled with long term clients and a plethora of new clients due to Facebook posting and word of mouth. In addition, I expanded and moved into a 350 sq ft space across the hall from my very first suite. Within my first year of business, my clientele had grown so much; I went from being booked only a couple days in advance to being booked 2-3 weeks in advance. Since my future business venture, I have always believed When God places something on your heart, go for it! You may think it’s Not your time or you’re at the back of the line, but I wholeheartedly believe when it’s your time God will move you to the front in the blink of an eye!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
In the Spring of 2017, my cousin asked me if I wanted to work at the European Wax Center in Beaumont, TX, alongside her for the summer. I recall the interview very vividly and getting hired on the spot. One summer turned into 3 years of employment there, then led me to 5 years as a business owner of my own waxing business. I never envisioned starting my own business, but I am grateful for the unexpected turn of life events and success. I often refer to my first career as a Wax Specialist for 8 years as the steppingstone to becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. During my time as a Wax Specialist at the European Wax Center in Beaumont, Texas contributed to my interpersonal skills by networking with my clients and creating life-long friendships. I was fortunate enough to encounter Licensed Professional Counselors who were able to give me insight into their career field. Many who stayed in contact with me over the year to provide me with help on my journey toward being a mental health professional. Through my increased networking abilities, I was able to obtain internship opportunities. I believe God has allowed me to cross paths with people to help me and to confirm that counseling is my purpose in life. As a wax specialist, 90% of the women who I encounter are strangers that I see in their birthday suit during our initial meeting. It’s my job to create a welcoming atmosphere while they’re in an exposed state! Not only do my clients come for waxes, but we also have mini therapy sessions, talking about personal things that never leave my wax suite. Being a wax specialist is where I initially learned the skill of confidentiality. Being a wax specialist, you must be trustworthy, reassure, educate and comfort clients throughout the process, practice safe sanitation methods and professionalism. Counseling is similar in many ways for me. Between 600 internship hours and 3,000 hours post-graduation I have been in the field since 2022 engaging in clinical work as a counselor. I meet complete strangers who come into my office and tell me their life story, secrets, & traumas that sometimes their own family don’t even know!
I pride myself on confidentiality, trustworthiness, honesty and integrity!

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes, I would choose both of my professions not only because of the success but the mental satisfaction I receive from helping others, being a listening ear, wise counsel, inspirng and providing others with hope as well as reassurance that there are genuine, kind hearted people that do exist. Along my journey my passion has grown, I have received confirmation as reassurance that I am walking in my purpose, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
My authenticity and willingness to be transparent, show others the upside of vulnerability, and embracing my humanness, I feel like it’s important to be Authentic and Relatable. As someone with both lived and professional experience into my workspaces, that’s my superpower as a counselor and business owner. As a therapist I do not portray to have the perfect life. I often reassure my clients that I am a human living and learning to navigate life through experiences, I just happen to have clinical skills to help myself and others. But that’s what makes me relatable to others because I understand the challenges of life. I just happen to have clinical skills and training to help myself and others navigate through the obstacles a bit easier.
