We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Boyd. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Taylor, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
About 10 years ago I was managing a salon with a lot of newer stylists. Naturally there were often re-dos where clients weren’t as happy as we would like. I became the go-to for corrective color services. As I became confident with these services I rebranded to specialize in color correction. One late night doing hair my friends and I were brainstorming names and AzHairDoctor was born. Since then I’ve done hundreds of color corrections some quick fixes and some 8-hours session. I absolutely love the transformation and giving clients confidence in their look.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got really lucky coming into this industry. When I was young I was always into beauty and fashion. During high school I had the chance to be in the first WestMec program for cosmetology. It was a great education and I still have friends from that program. While I still went on to college and currently am in nursing to add injections and more intensive skin treatments to the salon, it’s been the best career choice I’ve ever made. I absolutely love being a stylist and I’ve been doing it for 16 years at this point. My next move is to not only expand salon services but expand into wellness services as well. It is a long journey but I have goals to open a beauty and mental health retreat. This goal will help to fulfill my passion for making people feel and look beautiful. I have learned so much in the past 16 years and it has all been building towards this next phase in my career.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Limiting beliefs. This was a hard one for me, and it is for many people. Especially being a younger stylist, you look towards your peers and mentors for guidance and sometimes that’s not the best. If you have passion in your heart for something, you can do it. If you don’t like the way things operate, you can change it. Once my dreams started scaring me, I knew I was on the right track.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
In 2020 I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder with psychotic episodes- it came out of nowhere. Then in 2022 I had emergency back surgery. Both of these almost shattered me. I didn’t know what my life would look like. Would be able to care for my kids, what is going to happen to my business, so many things ran through my head. The support from my family and my clients kept me strong. I have since learned so much about what direction I want to take my life and I hope to inspire others along the journey.
