Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taylor Borton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Taylor, appreciate you joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I moved to Nashville at age 19 to study audio engineering. Upon graduating, I’ve been in the medical field filling receptionist roles. As of July, I am officially leaping into a full-time focus on music. I know that won’t be easy, and it will be a lot of hustle, but anything worth having isn’t easy and that’s a fact. I’ve spent a lot of my time living my life around work, now my mindset is working around MY life. If I take all the time I’ve put into a position I wasn’t 100% all into, I’d probably have a Grammy by now. I’m confident, happy and finally loving ME

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m originally from Youngstown, OH and have been residing in Nashville, TN for about 5 years. I’ve been performing (playing guitar and singing) for over 10 years now. My main focus today is on my songwriting and creating genuine relationships with those around me, those who would die for their craft. I was blessed to recently write with Steve Dean, Bill DiLuigi and Ryan Hydro, whom have many successes like multiple #1 songs on the charts. Putting talent and creativity aside, the name of the game is connecting and maintaining the right people around you. I’ve shared the stage with many influential people and have been to some amazing festivals in different states and cities. I plan to stay in Tennessee and continue this rollercoaster of a journey!

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Not everyone is going to be a fan of you. It doesn’t matter what you try or what you do. Do what makes you the happiest and most proud, because that light will shine through.
Anytime I would write a song or play a show, I wanted to please the crowd in every way I could. I think my mindset was correct, but the act itself is impossible. Do you like every song or artist you hear?

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Definitely. The biggest thing that people automatically assume is that it’s a hobby. Though they’re not completely wrong, the music industry CAN feed your family and CAN provide many forms of success. It’s like any career. You have to dedicate yourself to it, and you never stop learning and growing. Most people only look at the big picture, you’re famous or you’re not. They don’t know the stories and the smaller achievements that get you to where you are presently. That’s just the world we’re living in, instant gratification.
