We were lucky to catch up with Taylor Blythe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Taylor, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
From a young age I was interested in several creative activities such as dance, drawing and painting. I loved being creative with my outfits and expressing myself through clothes. So, when I was 8 my mom introduced me to the show “Project Runway”. I was instantly obsessed. I had never considered how clothes were made or that I could make my own prior to the show. For Christmas that same year I got my first sewing machine, and have been sewing ever since. When it came time to decide what to study in college I struggled to accept a creative path. I grew up in a small town where everyone works the typical 9-5 in a cubical. But ultimately I knew that the cubical life wasn’t for me, and while it was a risk, I was willing to go through the trails and tribulations of a creative career in fashion.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I grew up in small town Columbus, IN and moved to Savannah, GA in 2018 to study fashion design at the Savannah College of Art and Design. SCAD was an incredible experience that pushed me and shaped me into the designer I am today. I graduated from SCAD in 2022 and am still located in Savannah. My goal is to design clothes that inspire people to wear what they want, what makes them laugh, what makes them happy. Not what society expects them to wear based on age, shape, race, ect.. My designs typically include bright colors or interesting textures and are always inspired with a positive message. I want people to know that I design with the intention to make fashion fun and inclusive.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a fashion designer is making garments that make people feel comfortable, unique and confident.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
One of the most difficult part of a creative career is that their is no right answer. Math problems have a right and a wrong. Science has a right and wrong. Fashion is subjective. Some people might love your work, others might hate it. It is up to you to take the complements and the criticisms and grow from them, not let them discourage you.
