We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Taylor Blount a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Taylor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I came up with the idea for my business when I bought a pair of earrings and they broke after a couple wears. I was disappointed in the quality and thought to myself, “I can make these and do it better”. And the idea was born! I started collecting tools, watching videos, and reading tutorials online about clay and clay earrings. I started trying out different methods, upgrading my tools as I went along. The first few weeks were a lot of trial and error. Whether it was clay thickness, baking times, shapes, or styles, I was trying everything I could to find my style and learn the best ways to use the materials I had to make the best product I could.
Taylor, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Taylor, and I am a small business owner. I’ve been working on my craft and business for over three years now and have really enjoyed the journey and opportunities that come along with being a small business maker. I have lived in several states since starting my business which has helped my customer base grow.
I specialize in polymer clay earrings. I design styles that I believe can be worn every day. My main goal when I make my earrings is to help people feel beautiful and confident. I believe that dressing up your ears with a set of earrings is a great way to build confidence and enhance your personal style.
I am a perfectionist by nature and that translates into my work. I analyze each piece, examining all the details to be sure they are as perfect as can be. I want nothing but the best for my customers!
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
In late 2021, I started selling in person at markets locally and in larger cities during the holidays. This was a great move for my business because I was able to step out in the public and connect with the community, instead of just being another page on Instagram. I believe the best way to grow clientele, especially in the accessories business, is by being present and representing my brand in person in my community.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I sell online using my own website through BigCartel.com. I chose to use them for a few reasons:
Pros-
1. Etsy has higher fees which takes away from the creator
2. I am able to design my own site and calibrate it for my specific needs.
However, there are some cons to it.
1. Not using Etsy makes it harder to be found my random shoppers.
2. I need to know the ins and outs of SEO more so that I can be found.
3. Not everyone uses PayPal which can cause some issues for shoppers.
However, I still like using my site because it feels personal and caters to my business needs.
