Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taylor Black. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Taylor, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know
If I were starting over, I continue my education within every aspect of the industry I pursued. I would find a way to afford classes from the best educators and LEARN. School teaches your abc’s but ongoing education and experience in the field teaches you to read and write.

Taylor, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a hairstylist coming up on 7 years now. Choosing this career is not something I thought I would ever do but it came to me with ease and I quickly grew a passion for doing hair. The best part for me is working with woman of all colors, textures, and densities and helping them achieve the hair of their dreams, however big the transformation. When I first started in this career I was unsure and needing lots of practice, I always dreamed of the day where I could take someone’s current hair know exactly how to turn it into their goal. I am proud to say I have officially reached that point in my career! I became confident enough to leave a commission salon and open my own studio where I have the creative freedom to express myself and work with my amazing clients! I have expanded my brand from working behind the chair to styling full bridal parties for weddings, which I love the most. I have truly immersed myself in this career and I wouldn’t change a thing.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The best way to grow clientele in 2022 is social media! Take classes on how to work socials: hashtags, insights, how to reach new audiences. You have to BE social. Like, comment, follow, tag those who inspire. Network and make online friends as that’s what’s it’s there for.
Word of mouth is the second best way to grow clientele. Work with as many people as you can, be personable, be yourself!

Have you ever had to pivot?
Just recently, I pivoted from working a commission salon to renting my own studio. It was scary and a huge change. You never know if you’re going to have enough clients, what the start up costs will be like, if you’ll make enough money, or if you’re even good enough. I found out very quickly that my clientele is loyal and supportive, and I am good enough! It was the best decision I could have made for my career. I made sure I was ready and the numbers made sense but I had a calling to take the step and I am so glad I did.
