We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taylor Bennett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taylor below.
Alright, Taylor thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
The best thing I’ve ever done was also the biggest risk I’ve ever taken. I’m a mom of twins, so having stable income to provide for my family has always been of the utmost importance to me. In August 2020, I opened Iced by Taylor Desserts.
Originally, I started Iced by Taylor as something fun that I could do on the weekends, for extra income. I quickly fell in love with baking, getting creative with flavor combinations and connecting with my community. I was working full-time at the time, but I knew that my goal was for Iced by Taylor Desserts to be mine and my husband’s business that we could run together, alongside our twin daughters. I would get home from work at 7pm and start working on orders, I would take them with me the next day to work and deliver to clients on my lunch break. In the beginning, sleep was a luxury but now looking back, it was so so worth it.
In April, 2021 I took a leap of faith, trusted that God had a plan and quit my full-time job to focus on our business and pursue my dream. Everyone thought I was crazy, doubted me, questioned if it was the right time… It was the best decision I’ve ever made. Did I know if my business was going to provide consistent income to provide for my family? Absolutely not but I had faith and it turned out to be the best thing I have ever done.
I now have turned Iced by Taylor Desserts from bake sales on the weekends into a six-figure business, I have the flexibility to be available to take my daughters to school and pick them up, chaperone field trips, spend more time with family and one of the most important things, I get to be a part of all of my client’s special moments. Moments where they marry the love of their lives, find out the gender of their baby, celebrate their lives as parents to be and get to see them grow up and celebrate their birthdays every year. It is the most rewarding feeling to see my client’s faces light up when they see their vision come to life with their cakes and desserts. All of this happiness and success came from taking the biggest risk, trusting God and trusting myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hi there! I’m Taylor Bennett, the owner and cake artist at Iced by Taylor Desserts. We’re a latina and woman owned, home based cake shoppe based out of Orlando, Florida.
During the beginning of COVID 19, in August 2020, I made my twin daughters their 4th birthday cake. I had so much fun making their cake, that I started baking more as a hobby and my friends and family fell in love with my cupcake flavor combinations and encouraged me to do a bake sale and that’s how Iced by Taylor was born.
I’ve always been artistic growing up, so being able to get creative and bring a client’s vision to life was absolutely amazing. We specialize in custom buttercream cakes. We make cakes and desserts for weddings, baby showers, birthdays, corporate events and everything in between. We use the highest quality ingredients and put so much love into every cake and dessert we make.
My niche and what Iced by Taylor is known for is bohemian/boho cake styles with textured buttercream, dry florals and home-made fillings. We design your cakes to not only be the highlight of your event but to taste even better!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Social media has been the absolute best source of clientele for me. With new clients and previous clients, it’s such an amazing way to stay connected. I love being able to see when one of my clients graduates college, is expecting their first baby, getting engaged or any big milestone. I truly care about my clients, so being able to market on social media while also expressing my gratitude and genuine love for my clients and their support has helped me so successful in growing my platforms on social media.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
The first year of business is always the hardest. You’re still learning which seasons are the best for your business and which products are the most profitable/in demand.
When I first started Iced by Taylor, the holidays were amazing because I mainly offered gourmet desserts that people loved to purchase for family gatherings and just to indulge throughout the holiday season. My second holiday season, I expected the same even though my product was completely different. I went from focusing on gourmet desserts to custom celebration cakes and weddings so I learned to save in the peak seasons, market more efficiently and tailor my products to not only my type of clientele but the time of year as well.
