We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tayla Chenelle. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tayla below.
Hi Tayla, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
It’s funny, really, how the idea of being a blogger came about. I had just started my first “big girl job” straight out of college, and a coworker of mine introduced me to her fashion blog. I’ve always loved to write, so I was hooked pretty quickly. Soon after, I started researching how to start a blog of my own. Back then I don’t even think I knew there were folks making money –let alone an entire living–off of it. But what I did know, is that I’d one day have one.
Fast forward 3 years, and I started my first motherhood and productivity blog! I was on maternity leave with my oldest child and decided that I wanted to share my first-time motherhood experiences with other millennial moms, in hopes of inspiring or helping where I could. I also created a lot of content regarding working from home with kids, since it was my reality.
My thought process was this–there are so many topics within motherhood that I knew I could never run out of content. Not only that, but I also knew that the sort of content I created was evergreen and that it’d be relevant for years to come.
Being willing to be transparent and share my experiences with miscarriages, sleepless nights, teething toddlers and everything else in between solved one of the biggest problems a first time mom could face–feeling and being alone in her journey,
With my most recent endeavor, I’ve expanded my reach to millennial mompreneurs who want to learn to thrive personally and professionally; allowing them to strike the perfect balance for their current season of life.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Tayla Chenelle, a millennial mompreneur of 2, born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. I began my online journey in 2019, launching my very first motherhood blog. On this website, I was transparent in my experiences with being a first time mother, grieving from the loss of my own mother and being productive while working my 9 to 5 from home with my kid.
Over the years, my vision expanded quite a bit, and I decided to cater to moms who were even more like me in my latest season–finding healthy and fulfilling ways to balance motherhood and entrepreneuership. I’m incredibly ambitious by nature, and I know there are millions of other moms who can relate.
But I also know that those moms struggle with some of the same things I do on a daily basis–finding ourselves after birthing children, healing, learning and unlearning, and pressing play on pursing our dreams.
Now, The Balanced Mom Social stands to serve millennial moms on their balanced journey through community, coaching, strategies and resources created by someone who gets it.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I believe there are a couple of ways to build a social media following, but in my experience I’ve learned that consistency and relatability are winners. I make sure to post with purpose, with my audience top of mind. Reels have also been all the rage, and though that’s still an upward hill battle, they are becoming easier and reaching more of my audience. If I could give advice to a mama just starting out, it’s be this–consistently make relevant content that solves a problem. Don’t worry so much about aesthetics, just post! **Some of my top-performing posts were random, with very little confidence they’d do well.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Pivoting in life and in business happens more often than we’d like, but some are necessary. I pivoted to a much larger and broader niche due to my life simply continuing. Being a creator that produces content on their own experiences makes it easier to share, but also means–to a certain extent–that you must keep sharing, I realized my first blog was no longer fitting the bill, so I pivoted to include my entrepreneurship journey. Doing this has opened so many more doors of opportunity and is ;already proving to be the right move.
