We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tay Walker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tay thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your career and how did you resolve those issues?
In the music industry there are a lot of unexpected issues you will run into, it becomes part of the journey and you get used to it. When I joined the band for the internet. I quit my schooling to go on tour. This was scary because I had already invested time and money into my education but I knew that music was the ultimate end goal so it was an easy decision at the time. After realizing money was not going to come in immediately I started worrying about how I would support my self. Every show I did was purely for the love of doing it and being able to travel and see the world and expose my self. I was not getting paid, however I was able to meet people that I never would have had the chance of meeting if I didn’t take that risk. Money is very hard to come by unless you’re signed or you have a huge following from the jump. I had neither so It was always an uphill battle. Fast forward and now I have to children that look to me for support and I’m still not where I want to be financially but the fire burns even brighter because of them.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Im a singer songwriter and producer from Inglewood Ca. One of my best friends is syd from the internet. She and I grew up making music as kids and she became a global star while working with odd future. I was there through it all and she decided to bring me along for the first tour she had as the keyboardist and BG vocalist. Im most proud of being part of the mac Miller space migration tour the was turned into a hit live album. I also got to sing behind Chance the rapper on his SNL debut along with see the world while touring. She has showed me a glimpse of what life would be like if my dreams came true. I went off to pursue my own music and with her help grew a modest fan base. I went on to win a reality tv show called signed on Vh1.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being an artist is kind of like having a rare superpower. It’s the ability to explain life in a way that most people just can’t. There is no right or wrong way to do it because art comes directly from the mind of the artist. Every person in the world has an appreciation for art in some way shape or form. From music to paintings and even movies. The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is to be able to contribute inspiration to the world. Art inspires us all to be better. When I hear someone tell me that my music helped them through a dark time it further proves my point that we are needed in this world. It cost me nothing to write a story into a song But the feeling I get from doing it is priceless.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Failure is a common foe in the pursuit of your dreams. I had to learn this by constantly getting rejected by labels, executives and artist alike. People won’t be able to see the big picture inside your head and it’s up to you alone to push through the negativity and unfairness of the industry. People have told me that my music isn’t current enough or that it’s a pipe dream that only comes to life with good luck and a miracle. People will pretend to care about you only to get something out of you and it’s something every artist has to get used to. I like to think of myself as a genuine honest person but I later found out that those qualities are not necessarily what gets you to the top spot. That being said I refuse to change my beliefs or my character. I plan to use my god given talent to push me through the door.
