We recently connected with Tawakalitou Alawoe and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tawakalitou thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I have worked on was my book because at first, I was not planning to write my book. The backstory started during the pandemic in 2020 while I was so bored during quarantine, I started journaling and writing my life story about the traumatic of my childhood, by going through cultural tradition and religions expectations, my father death which was following by my unknown illness that put me in a coma for 3 months. This situation made me a disabled woman not by birth but circumstantial situation. Then in 2021 I met a stranger in the mall name Mary Beth who connected to my publisher who helped me to get my story out my head into a paper.
Here is a brief of summary of my story and why its meaningful to me because of the vulnerability and the authenticity of my story journeying through each page in the book I share my story in different interval of my life.
“This inspiring memoir chronicles the remarkable life journey of a woman born as the 19th child in a family of 22 siblings in Lomé, Togo. Growing up in a polygamous household fraught with challenges, she navigated emotional pain, cultural expectations, and personal struggles to emerge as a strong, resilient, and confident individual.
The author reflects on her experiences of living in a household divided by her father’s multiple marriages and the cultural norms of her upbringing. Despite financial support from her father, his emotional absence and the complex dynamics of her family left her yearning for love and validation. Her life took a transformative turn after her father’s death and a near-fatal coma, events that ignited her journey of faith, self-discovery, and empowerment.
Through vivid descriptions of her life in Togo, the author sheds light on the rich cultural backdrop of her homeland, while also addressing the societal challenges of misogyny, religious expectations, and the pressures of tradition. She bravely recounts her transition from Islam to Christianity and how embracing her faith gave her the strength to overcome adversity.
The book is a testament to the power of perseverance, faith, and self-belief. It seeks to inspire readers by showing that, no matter how dark life’s circumstances may seem, there is always hope and a path forward. The author’s story serves as a powerful reminder that our past does not define us but instead refines us, shaping us into the individuals we are meant to be.
This memoir is a celebration of resilience, faith, and the miracles that can happen when we trust in God and ourselves. It encourages readers to never give up and to recognize the beauty of life’s possibilities despite the hardships they face.”

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Also, if they are looking for a speaker who doesn’t just talk—but transforms lives? I am the answer to that question.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
After my father’s death I had to find a way to survive on my own with my mothers and my other siblings by selling soaps or any good that would bring money for foods. Sometimes, I would buy wholesale soaps and any other items that I could sell to gain profit to help my family and myself. I walked many miles to sell those soaps and items so that I could get some money, rain or shine. I cried sometimes. I looked up in the sky and asked, “Is there a God in heaven that sees
our pains and struggles? Why does God always seem so silent when we go through so many trials in life?” The only answer I got at that moment was: TRUST THE PROCESS. I did trust the process which make the strong, resilient, and confident I am today.
When I first started thinking about writing this book, I never thought I would finish or even get so far. I postponed
writing so many times, on top of not having a great laptop. It was old and frequently froze and blacked out when I was doing my writing. Sometimes I was so frustrated that I wanted to give up, but I am glad I did not. I would go to the library to continue writing. However, one gladsome day, I felt inspired and wrote my first two chapters, and continued as the days, weeks, and months went by. I wrote the last two chapters at the start because those experiences were very fresh and new in my mind. So what is your excuse for not fulfilling your dreams and goals? If I can put my painful stories into writing an
inspiring book, so can you or anyone.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, I am on a mission to empower individuals and communities to overcome adversity, rebuild with resilience, and create a future filled with success and purpose.
