We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tavon Brooks. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tavon below.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Tavon Brooks and I am a licensed realtor in the state of Missouri registered with Coldwell Baker Realty Gundaker. Currently, I have practiced real estate consulting for about a year and a half. I was inspired to become a realtor by my partner at the time. She was a realtor and thought that I could become an excellent realtor. Prior to being a realtor, I was in the hospitality and music industry. I created SmoothLight Production LLC. an event management company that also managed and owned a restaurant. However, my passion is real estate. Real estate has all the elements that I love. The service to the people, the personal development, the freedom, the negotiation, the personal relationship that you create with your client, and of course the compensation.
One of the most important pieces of advice I offer in this interview is before any real estate transaction consult a realtor. Real estate is complicated. There are many entities that are involved with a real estate transactions. Of course the buyer, the seller, the lender, the city, the state, and the feds. So, seeking advice from someone who has the tools and the consistency is a huge benefit to an individual seeking to invest in real estate in any way. What makes me unique is the personal experiences I bring to the table. International experience, multi-lingual, entrepreneurship, and the ability to adapt. Forgot to mention I am a Proud Father.
Let’s talk M&A – we’d love to hear your about your experience with buying businesses
My partner and I leased a restaurant with an option to buy. I was so inspired by the owner’s story that when the opportunity presented itself I jumped. It was a fine-dining soul food restaurant. I managed the same restaurant for about 3 years prior to taking ownership. Purchasing the restaurant was my kind of way of giving back to the community. We partnered with government and local agencies offering their clients jobs and business development.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
The restaurant that I had just taken ownership of had ended in less than 3 months. My partner and I invested a lot of money in the remodeling of the restaurant. Hiring a staff of 12. With the increase in revenue of 50% on average. The previous owner and I did not share the same business ethics and breached the contract. You would think a 13-year business person would play fair. I immediately went full swing as a realtor selling my 1st house one month after the devastating breakup. I do plan to reopen The Choice and I also plan to franchise in every state.
