We recently connected with Tavion Dixon and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tavion, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The day I knew I wanted to pursue music was in the 3rd grade. I already grew up around music with my family playing it constantly around the house and especially at my grandmother’s house. Every holiday, we would visit her, and she had a stereo and a massive collection of records and cassette tapes in her living room. Most of those holidays at her house would be full of sounds for most of the day. During those early years of my life, I would discover oldies, RNB, hip hop, rock, blues, and jazz, from listening to all the music she had in there. This helped me develop my love for music and my fascination would grow as I have gotten older. The spark for my creative path was lit forever when it came to my elementary school’s awards ceremony. I had a music class that I loved and my teacher Ms Medalin, would help me push my love for it further as I would help her little helper with the music projects we did in class. But it was one big end-of-the-school-year project that she would get me to help her make rhythms with and it came to me naturally because of my background. As the awards ceremony began, they had awards for academics, arts, and other certificates but the one that I would receive would be the outstanding music award as she said “If this kid doesn’t grow up to become a producer then I don’t know what happened. This award goes to Tavion Dixon.” It is funny because at first, I didn’t even know I was gonna get that award but after that, those words rang in my head ever since and that day, I decided that I loved music so much that I wanted to make my own, and so on, I started building the craft that I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Tavion and I’m a 24-year-old music producer, audio engineer, DJ, artist, and creative. I’m from North Carolina but I’m currently living in Brooklyn, making my way into the scene looking for opportunities, shows, and other creators to work with. With my own music, I made my signature “Supa” sound by taking elements of different genres of music and colliding them all together to make something new and innovative. When I was 5 years old, I remember always hearing Pharrell’s “Frontin” on the radio and that would be the first song I could ever get out of my head, I would get my interest in music from there and explore it into my own world. I started discovering more genres of music as I got older and broadened my music knowledge. Pharrell, Timbaland, J Dilla, Kid Cudi, and Hudson Mohawke would become my biggest influence in music-making but the name “Supa Dupa” comes from my love for Missy Elliot and Kid Cudi. “Supa Dupa Fly” was one of the songs I used to listen to the most even before making my own music and Kid Cudi was one of the artists that I found that I’ve been listening to ever since I started making music but he had a verse in his song “Down N Out” that made me choose that name before he blew up, he had the ad-lib “Supa Dupa” that he would always say before hopping on the track as well. One thing that I’m proud of is my own process and how far I’ve come and how far I’m still trying to go. I’m proud of myself for continuing to stick with the craft and to keep pushing it further beyond. The main thing that I want people to know about me is that I want them to chase their own dreams and never settle for less (as long as their dream isn’t harming anyone else). Nothing’s impossible and it can be achieved through passion, dedication, and hard work. Never settle for less, always put 200% into what you are creating for yourself, and never ever quit.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is that you get to get paid and travel around the world to do what you love if you get good enough, you get to create something from nothing but an idea or vision that you’ve thought of and put it into reality and the last thing is that you get to meet other creators that you can create with. It’s honestly just like magic to me when you can think of an idea and execute it to make it come to life. I applaud everyone who can have a vision and bring it into reality because there are plenty of people who don’t have this power and some who don’t get to use this power to their full advantage. Once you get to that point of being able to get paid to be creative, it is a wonderful feeling. After all, you are doing a job that doesn’t even feel like one because you love it so much, and the energy you bring to it, helps bring back more opportunities and open doors that might change your life in an instant. Lastly, being able to communicate a hidden language with another creative in the form of art is the biggest cheat code to me. You can put two heads together and bring something innovative into the world and it only gets better with more like-minded creatives as you start to work with more people and you understand more perspectives and walks of life by collaborating with other creatives and building a sense of community.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
There is one big mission that I developed that was inspired by the main artists that I look up to and that mission is to remind all of the younger creators and anybody who has a dream, that they can do whatever they want to and follow their own dreams as long as it’s not harming anybody else. During my parents’ childhood, they were not as fortunate enough to be able to follow their dreams as they had different circumstances growing up, and the fact that they supported me, and my goals and encouraged me to follow my own dreams is a privilege I do not take for granted. It’s plenty of dreamers around the world who are trying to achieve their own goals and do something they’ve always wanted to do, and sometimes that doesn’t get to happen for everyone. My thing is that I want to just encourage everyone who listens to my music to do the same with achieve the life and dreams they always wanted. I want to inspire them to never ever settle for less and with the passion, hard work, consistency, and love they have for that certain thing, will help them achieve whatever they want as long as they stick to it, never quit, and give it there all as I’m telling my own story of how I did it and they can do it too. There will be bumps in the road and it is not always gonna be happy days but through those hard times, they’re able to keep going and transform themselves into unstoppable creatives that were able to accomplish whatever goals they set for themselves.
