We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tavasha Ancrum. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tavasha below.
Tavasha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I truly wish I had started my business way sooner. I started it in 2020 but I was already taking clients way before incorporating it. However I took my business seriously pretty late I’d say. I also took a couple breaks in between due to personal reasons which I feel kind of set me back a little.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a hair braider in Miami. I began braiding professionally at the age of 18 but I didn’t see it as something I’d be doing for long. It was only to make my own money until I found another job. Even though I went through a phase in middle school of wanting to become a hairstylist because thats whst I grew up seeing my mom do, it wasn’t until I was 25 when I decided to take it more seriously. But with temporarily relocating, then getting pregnant with my second child, I had put my business on hold not once but twice. I enjoy the hair industry and helping my clients feel more confident, there’s no stopping me now. I recently joined a team of barbers at Classic Stylez barbershop with the hopes of servicing more male clientele, however I would never stop servicing my women. I have hopes of someday owning my own shop someday as well. While braiding is my main thing I also have my own edge control line. Hopefully my products will be in stores some day.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
My side hustle definitely turned into my full time business and pretty recently actually. I was working security overnight and taking clients during the day. It was not easy, especially while being a mom of two little boys. But like any other present parent I did what I had to do. Plus, I was fortunate to have the help of their dad alot of the time. My side hustle started as just a hobby to make more money but then it became something I truly enjoy up until this very day. l I see me doing this for a while.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients for me I aoukd have to say is instagram. Though word of mouth has also played a huge part in my business, instagram has worked for me just as much. I’ve had clients come and say they found me via instagram and not only that but even when someone or yourself tell others about you people want to see all of your work. What better place than your social media?
