We were lucky to catch up with Tavarez Stewart recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tavarez, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
If I could do anything differently starting over I would redirect my focus. When I was younger I was chasing love and all these materialistic things that did nothing for my goals and aspirations in the end. I was putting so much effort in things that wasn’t being put back into me while putting my goals on the back end. If I had the mentality I have now I feel my career would have already reached its peak. As of now I feel ive been doing better with my content because I have been more consistent with no distractions to slow me down. Things that could help me speed up the process to getting where I need to be is getting more exposure to the world. Everything is hard starting out until you hit that one viral video and everybody is watching you.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I started my YouTube channel( Mr.Tmz Vlogs) my last few years at Jackson State University. Doing YouTube has never been a life goal of mine until I started getting paid from it. My friends use to always record me for just being a silly person so I thought to my self why not start a channel for me to display my personality. I went to college with the mind set of getting my degree and having a high paying Job after graduating but even withabtaining a BA in Computer Engineering that just wasn’t enough. Something in me just doesn’t like working or being ordered around when I can make more money for just being me. I am so proud of my self for taking this leap of faith to start a channel. I never had the courage enough to start it because I Believed nobody would want to watch what I do. I never considered the fact everybody would naturally watch me because I was one of the J5 Drum majors for one of the best bands across the country which was the Sonic Boom of the South. I have big dreams of becoming one of the biggest YouTubers of my generation. At times being a content creator can be overwhelming when you dont get the support you want but anything worth having doesn’t come easy.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Promotion. A lot of times as content creators we dont think on a business aspect. Anything that makes you money is a business and need promotion. If you dont promote what you got going on how can you expect somebody else to promote you. It’s not about just putting out content and hoping people will like it and enjoy it but you also have to reach out to others on your own. When I first started Youtube I joined every social media platform even if I dont care to be on it. Every platform has a different audience so I promoted my content on every one of them. Just Think about everybody that has a phone is not on all social media platforms so that means you have to take that extra mile to broadcast it to where they are available.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Being a drum major definitely helped my channel out in so many ways. Most of my views came from band videos ,thats just how I started. Most people either knew me for being a drum major or being a member of Phi Bet Sigma Fraternity Inc. That Boost helped me with subscribers and it recommended my videos to are all through the YouTube algorithm.
