Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tatyana Boswell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tatyana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My first official client was in 2016, My senior year of high school I did prom makeup for a few classmates as well as my own. My good friend till this day allowed me to beautify her for prom i only charged her $30 for a no flashback beat! My freshman year of college I began running campus specials for extensions to gain traction. I would constantly get compliments on my hair and my inner circle of friends would always convince me to stay up until 2am sometimes doing their hair and party nights i was the designated MUA. Starting there i allowed my friends to be my muse letting me try variations of styles and colors at the time I was only charging $50 for an install and it was worth every penny, we were all broke college students trying to get by I wasn’t as skilled as i am now but in the moment they were looks to kill for all my sorority clients. During that time i would take about 3 clients a week even my resident assistants would walk by my dorm room door and watch me work. I always left my door open as i worked because my room was the designated “chill” area since i was the only freshman to live alone.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My first steps into the beauty industry began with my mother she is a Cosmetologist and a shopaholic. Ive always loved high fashion seeing my mom in Jean Paul, Galliano, Cavalli dresses, nice jewelry and the constant hair changes always inspired me to look my best and provide that service to others to look their best as well. The problems I solve for my clients are more so internal, I use my hair appointments as a form of therapy for not only my customers but myself as well. Connecting with each other on a vulnerable level such as you hair that is something sacred i feel, you don’t just let anyone touch your hair and you don’t share certain parts of you with anyone my chair is a safe space to vent, cry, love, laugh as well as build confidence. The thing that sets me apart from other is i’m genuine most people are in the business for the money but its bigger than that, its about who you network with allowing others to feel comfort with you while providing that service. The things i’m most proud of is my returning clientele that shows me that there is value in what i’m doing with each person i’m coming in contact with no matter if it’s male or female and the work is impeccable if i do say so myself. I want everyone to feel as beauty as they look on the outside after we meet we are all superstars in our own way.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my social media audience starting from Myspace, for a long time my mom wouldn’t let me have social media so i had secret accounts with hundreds to thousands of friends. I was always know to have nice clothing as well as a new hairstyle every two weeks so people just gravitated to me because of that. During that time i would be involved in a lot of drama online but it would only get me hundreds of friend request. My youtube channel has been something i’ve built from the ground up starting with 3 views that feels like my baby, starting with makeup tutorials, hair videos, sponsorships, clothing hauls. From there it just grows and grows organically its about being consistent. Im in the process of growing my Tiktok to be monetized with the same category of content like my Youtube channel.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Networking has been the best source of new clients for me, handing out business cards at the mall, other clients recommending me, going out more locally to show my face allow other to get familiar with me. Only being in places that add value with people that add value.
