We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tattoo Dragun. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tattoo below.
Tattoo, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Like most up and coming artists of my generation, I’ve learned how to tattoo by self experimentation. Watching videos, reading books, and reaching out to other artists for pointers I was able to grow quickly within a short amount of time. An important part of my process was seeking an apprenticeship which gave me visual experience as well. Being creative, excelling in marketing and customer service and remaining humble are the best skills to have as an artist. While this industry does have a tendency to gatekeep, learning on my own has been a great experience nonetheless
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a tattoo artist from a small city, Columbia SC. I am not only a minority but also a woman which puts me at a very low percentage compared to other artists in the industry. I work with this however and pride myself on being different and remaining optimistic about the growth of my career. I obtained my bachelors degree in Art and minor for business and strive to build my own tattoo studio in the near future.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
A share, repost, or word of mouth costs nothing and in today’s society we operate mostly using our phones. If you can’t support an artist with booking a service than sharing their art and deals goes along way in our eyes too.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect about being an artist is creating the artwork, being proud of it and the clients reaction/joy of the piece you provided. Nothing beats the smile on their face after seeing the design come to life.
