We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tatiyana Canady a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tatiyana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
When I first entered the beauty industry, beauty services were mostly looked at as a luxury or something to indulge in a few times a year. Now, we are seeing a huge transition, as facial treatments are no longer just a luxury, but truly a necessity. Consumers are interested in how they can not only look beautiful, but feel equally as amazing on the inside. We are seeing the aesthetic industry truly transition to an “inside-out” approach, and it’s remarkable.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always known I wanted to own a business. I also knew I wanted to help people. I wasn’t one of those kids who knew exactly what I wanted to do when I grew up, I just knew I wanted to make an impact. I kind of stumbled into the beauty industry by doing makeup for a friend’s wedding. From there, I decided to enroll in esthetics school and I fell completely in love with helping people with their skin.
I have enjoyed learning many different skills throughout my years in the industry. I am most proud of my commitment to education and my self-proclaimed disdain for all things super trendy. I believe each person is unique and that is my approach to treating the skin. When each client walks in my treatment room, I have an idea of what I’m going to do for their skin, but it’s not “cookie-cutter”, I adjust depending on what their skin needs, and that’s how my clients achieve such remarkable results. My clients lovingly refer to me as a personal trainer for their skin, because we work together so closely to get them to their skin goals.
I believe that balance is essential in every aspect of life, and I love utilizing my knowledge as a Nutritionist to offer an integrative approach to skincare. I take a look at my client’s lifestyle, diet, and cosmetic history to determine the best course of action for them. I want to empower every person to have the healthiest skin of their lives. I believe our skin knows how to heal itself, it just needs to be given the proper environment and ingredients it recognizes. Taking this approach has helped so many people heal their skin without the use of harsh products or treatments. I am so proud of the way I’ve been able to impact my clients lives by helping them feel more confident in their skin!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I have a reputation for being a skincare “nerd”. I love the science behind skincare, and I take pride in having partnered with some of the most effective and clinically proven skincare brands in the industry. Typically, in skincare, you either have a day-spa or a med-spa, and I pride myself on providing results-driven skincare treatments in an environment that encourages my clients to kick back and relax. My goal was to create a hybrid of the two, and I feel like I have created that for my wonderful clients.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I love anything by Brené Brown. She speaks a lot about courage and vulnerability, and although that doesn’t have much to do with the technical side of performing facial treatments, my business is very much relationship-based. I aim to foster a connection with my clients, and to build trust with them. Brené Brown speaks about how important it is to face the hardships courageously, and how it’s okay to not always know the answers. Another book I suggest all entrepreneurs read is “The E-Myth Revisited” by Michael Gerber. It completely changed the way I view running my business.
