We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tatiayanna Jones a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tatiayanna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Purple48 came to me during the early stages of the pandemic in 2020. I was laid off from my job, as were many people yet that didn’t make the situation any better. Being stuck at home and having our privileges stripped away, I found solace with online shopping.
It was easy, convenient and best of all private. I would drown myself on the internet, scrolling through hours and hours of my favorite items.
Everyone at the time, was making masks and selling them. So I decided that I needed to have a side hustle or something to fall back on because going back to work was uncertain.
So I looked on YouTube and a few tutorials on mask making. Pretty easy right? Wrong! I struggled cutting, measuring and sewing. So I put aside all the cool material I purchased and believed my mask making success would come by paying someone else to make the masks.
I went on a website that offered the convenient option of designing your mask and they make them and ship them out.
Well, I discovered one important thing about myself. I’m not a designer. I can dress to impress but designing was not my calling.
So, I went back to the drawing board. I was in too deep, to give up, having my own hustle. But rather than calling it a side hustle which made it sound flighty, I called it a business.
Now with this business I needed a big idea. Something I can sell that was profitable and that I knew most about.
It all came together one day. I love beauty, I love wigs and I enjoy getting them online!
This is where my idea came from.
Now that I had a business and my business has a niche, I needed a name.
The first name was hair and eyelashes by Purple48.
However, in the months to come I had a consultation with a guy who said Purple48 Hair Collection and more.
He convinced me that adding ” and more” would leave my business the opportunity to add more products to the collection.
Last year I was able to expand Purple48 Hair to P48 Style Fashion and collaborate with other brands to offer haircare products.
I love the color purple and it’s mentioned in the bible 48 times.
Thats where purple48 came from.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Purple48 Hair Collection and more offers a wide variety of wigs, hair extensions and haircare products. From flat irons and blow dryers to makeup from your favorite brands such as Maybelline, rude and NYX. Our most newest additions to the brand is the clothing side.
The vendor I use offers jewelry, shoes women’s clothing.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media is critical for businesses today. I was absent from all social media outlets for 3 years. So much has changed over the years, I had t to soo much. I went with a company that promised to gain thousands of followers every month. I blindly went in on this deal and gained close to 15,000 followers. People with names I couldn’t pronounce, with no to little followers.
Fake accounts.
Not only can fake accounts get you banned from IG but all my content was being shown to invisible people.
So what I did was go through over 15,000 accounts delete them. As I’m going through that, I paid for ads that targeted real people. So my content brought real followers while deleting fake accounts.
Engaging on other accounts makes a huge difference. My advice would be to actively follow IG accounts that have content that interests you so that it’s easier to get and stay engaged.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Authority in your niche is important and Establishing it is key for people to know and recognize your brand. Being out in your local community brings local awareness. Being featured in reputable magazines by getting your face and brand noticed has enabled me to achieve the results I’ve been looking for.
