We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tatianah Green a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tatianah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you manage your own social media?
Yes, I manage my own social media. I have a specific social media account for my business on Instagram and Facebook. What I like about having a separate account for my business is that I can curate my content and support other business owners. I’m better able to find other creators to follow, engage with, and test what works best for my market. One thing I like to do on Instagram is “collaborate” with my personal account when I want to post an Instagram Reel that may reach more people.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My journey as a small business owner in home decor came from a love for photography and fashion. Growing up, I would make a hobby out of taking photos and preserving those memories in frames, scrapbooks, and photo albums. Nowadays, with our photos stored primarily on our phones or in a digital format, I thought about how I could create something unique to bring back displaying print photos. I wanted to create photo frames with fabric, starting with African textiles and prints, so I tried it out and then launched my business through Etsy in April 2018. Since then, I’ve expanded my business offerings to collage letters, photo mats, multimedia artwork, greeting cards, and client custom orders. It has been a pleasure to create pieces that have reached people’s homes worldwide, from California to Australia.
I’m honored to be featured as a Star Seller on the Etsy platform, recognizing my shop’s success over the past several months. I want new and potential clients to know that Notes By Tatianah fabric-covered photo frames, photo mats, and artwork take your interior decor to the next level! Our dynamic patterns and textures add a special touch to your home, office, event, or next gift idea. Visit our online shop for licensed characters, custom prints, and sizes!
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I started selling my products through Etsy in 2018. It was an ideal choice for the handmade items that I create. Some of the pros include: my customer base is already using the platform or going there for unique gifts or home decor, it’s easy to set up your shop and sell, the site makes it easy to find your products, and Etsy is constantly trying new ways to provide their sellers like myself the tools and leads to generate more business. I encourage most makers to start an Etsy shop in addition to their business’ website. They also give sellers shipping discounts to send their orders out through USPS and more.
Some cons of using Etsy are the fees associated with selling there. The fees are not as steep as other platforms, but you get charged to publish your product listing and additional small fees that may apply, from transaction fees to shipping fees.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I like to start brand loyalty off with quality customer service. I sell my frames and other products primarily through Etsy, which encourages good customer service practices with potential customers and returning customers. It involves the basics like responding in a timely manner, listening to what your customers are looking for, and doing your best to provide that. This shows up in my custom works, where I get details from the clients, hear their stories behind the piece they’re requesting, and bring their ideas to life to the best of my abilities. It’s a fun and challenging experience; it brings me joy to add these beautiful frames to customers to decorate their homes or give as gifts.
I also include business cards and a custom message for each customer. I want them to know I appreciate their business and take my time to put their orders together. The quality of my work also helps brand loyalty and repeat customers.
