We were lucky to catch up with Tatiana Workman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tatiana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
The makeup and skincare business is forever evolving as far as trends are concerned. Whether it be Makeup no , no makeup looks , dewy sun-kissed skin or the classic instagram baddie makeup. Instagram flawless makeup is my favorite trend, I love sculpted skin, defined brows, fluffy lashes with a neutral eyeshadow. A sultry look is effortless and timeless .It it one trend that hasn’t faded even. Festival makeup is also popular at the moment, graphic liner , pops of color and bold blush inspired by the Coachella festivals.
Tatiana , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Tatiana Workman a licensed esthetician and makeup artist. I began my career in makeup about 14 years ago , as a receptionist at a prestige hair salon in my hometown of Maryland. Everyday I came in to work in full glam catching the eye of the owner. Daily she asked about my makeup looks and if I’d be interested in doing glam for her clients. I finally agreed and we’d collaborate on several of her clients. It was the beginning of career and beauty.
A year later I moved to Colorado and applied for a part time job as a MAC artist. I ended up working for the brand for 10 years, advancing in to a manager position. Working for such an exclusive brand gave me the tools to express myself creatively, be patient, cultivate relationships, build clientele and problem solve. MAC Cosmetics was a stepping stone for my brand and gave me the tools to become my own boss.
In 2018 I decided to take the leap and open my own beauty studio. I utilized social media to market and brand myself. My target audience were women looking for special occasion makeup services such as ; bridal , birthday, photo shoots, baby showers etc. My business did so well that I was able to open my schedule full time.
Currently I do makeup for television , editorial, bridal, destination makeup, special occasions and contract with social media influencers. I recently graduated esthetician school and plan to become a medical esthetician. I will provide skincare services such as; facials, hair removal, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and more. I’m so excited to share my future endeavors with my existing clients and potential clients. My goal is to enhance, enrich and educate while providing a luxurious experience for everyone I service.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Building an audience on social media can be tricky as it’s forever changing. The best way to navigate social media is to be consistent. Post trendy high quality photos/videos, content that is related to you craft and be personable. The audience actually engages more when they see the face of the brand so get behind your content. Ensure to post on your feed and story at-least 3 times a week.
Can you open up about a time when you had a really close call with the business?
The pandemic of 2020 almost took my business out. It was one of the scariest times and I almost gave up on my business. Makeup is a luxury service not a necessity so many people did not need services, which means I was not bringing in revenue. Myself and many others in the industry were left wondering how’d we survive but thank goodness for government financial resources and the world opening up. Some key advice is if you plan to start a business save at least 6 months of rent if possible. Leverage your day job and transition into your business full time once you have a savings cushion.
