We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tatiana Velazquez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tatiana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
The biggest risk to take as an artist is to be vulnerable. Vulnerability is the scariest and simultaneously most freeing feeling. I’m in a constant state of vulnerability by putting myself out there with my art and music. I’ve become addicted to the feeling after doing it for almost 20 years. When you create something and share it with the world, you put yourself out there to be perceived and often people will judge or project. Once the art is put in the world, it’s out of your hands and does not belong to you anymore. It belongs to the one who’s observing it, and naturally people will perceive it in many ways.
Tatiana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have always been all over the place because my interests are dependent on the moment, what is available to me, and what tools are best to outlet my expression. I never get bored because I can move on to another expression that is fitting for the time. I enjoy creating through many forms: music, painting, crafting, even cleaning. There is an art to doing– doing almost anything. And the beauty of it, is that you can base your entire life around it. Creating is a lifestyle.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I had to unlearn to expect support from friends, family, or anyone. It was a tough realization, but the truth is, it’s never about them. I express out of a need to for my own wellbeing. We can’t control how others will respond to our ambitions, and it really doesn’t matter. Often their opinions stem from something in themselves, so it really has nothing to do with the creator. If anything, it’s great to evoke any kind of emotion out of people whether it’s good or bad. I just want people to feel.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to be in a constant state of expression. And I especially don’t like to overthink what I’m doing, much like a stream of consciousness. Overthinking loses the focus and loses the moment. The art of creating is being able to capture the moment of inspiration as it happens. It’s like a dream, if you don’t write it down, it’ll be gone forever. And I just want to catch these waves forever.
