We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tatiana Janvier a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tatiana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
It’s interesting actually because it came to me very randomly. Through out life Ive heard the compliment beauty queen a lot, actually I changed my instagram handle to Beautyqueen T as a play on that compliment. I knew from the beginning I wanted the word tresses to be involved, but i was stuck with the rest wasn’t looking for a name when it came to me I was relaxing scrolling on social media, because women are so amazing I sometimes will compliment women and give them a yesss queen lol so I typed it under a beautiful young lady’s post and boom I was like omg Beauty Queen Tresses! That’s it it felt right for my brand.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Tatiana, I am 28 years old and I grew up in Florida. How Beauty Queen Tresses came about is actually quite interesting. I had a relaxer my whole life, since I was four which is a product that chemically straightens African American/curly hair/kinky hair. My cousin actually went natural and cut off her chemically treated hair and would talk to me about it and kept telling me I should try it and it would change my life. I kind of put it off like “yea that’s great.” I became curious and did some research and learned about the toxicity of these chemical treatments. One of the main ingredients is ammonia which is a toxin. I’ll never forget i was watching a youtube video where the young lady used the relaxer cream to clean off an old used burned up rusted flat iron and it cleaned it like new. I thought “okay I’m ready to let go of these chemical treatments.” I started to do research and make my own products at home my biggest hit with my family was my hair oil every one loved it and my mom keep asking me when are you going to start selling this. I had not one single thought about selling it. It actually took my about six months to decide to sell it. This was something I made for myself and my family i had no interest in selling it. Once I did start to sell it I realized it was a gem and started to learn more about business and the rest is history.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn to desire acceptance from every single person. One of my biggest hesitations with starting a business is that not everyone is going to like my products. I had to learn not everything is for everyone. It’s okay if your product doesn’t work for someone it doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a great product.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I have some amazing, beautiful loyal clients, we have emails that go out to all of our clients to keep them in the loop about new products but for a lot they know how to personally reach me. I really look forward to my brand growing into a multimillion dollar one day but i hope to still have that relationship with certain clients, the accessibility to me where they can ask questions and get tips goes beyond selling the products, It is a wonderful experience.
