We were lucky to catch up with Tatiana Frost recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tatiana, thanks for joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
My company name “Socorra Rose” was inspired by both of my late grandmothers which were huge influences in my life. My mothers mom “Socorra” , which is my middle name, moved here from Puerto Rico for a better life for her family. My father’s mother (Christine Frost) , who was a lover of all things gardening and her favorite flower was “Rose” , was a beautiful and giving person to anyone she met. I knew I wanted my name to honor my family and continue the legacy.
Tatiana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tatiana Frost, the founder of Socorra Rose an Afro-Latina home aroma company based in Harlem, NY. Socorra Rose was founded in 2020 during the early months of the pandemic. My love for being creative and trying new things birthed our first ever candle “Rager” in the kitchen of my apartment. Sharing this candle with some friends and family the response was amazing and I decided to launch the candle October 2020.
After launching our first candle we quickly added more candle scents and scaled with more product categories such as room and linen sprays, incense, and other home essentials. I believe the thing that sets Socorra Rose apart from the rest of the home aroma company is its unique scents and the experience we offer our customers. We recently launched candle of the month inspired by iconic black films that I personally hold dear because of the nostalgic era of the 80’s and 90’s. It is something to watch a movie, but to create a scent that inspires them and have customers say “oh you nailed it” brings me great joy! Currently, I am most proud of my drive to keep going in a business that sometimes may seem overly saturated, but having that unique sauce that sets us apart and keeps our customers coming back and inviting their friends & family to the party.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Yes, I am the sole manufacturer here at Socorra Rose. It started back when we made our very first candle in the kitchen of my apartment using a double boiler to melt the wax and mixing the scents to find the perfect combination that will make our candle smell up a room without even lighting a match. I had absolutely no experience in what I was doing. It was a lot of Youtube, research, google, and try and error. I am thankful for my sister TaJonay Tarrats who is a baking and pastry chef and fellow business owner of (Dopektchn Sweets) because she helped with converting all my recipes when I first started and even until today. I would say the lesson I learned along the way about manufacturing products is that there are a lot of testing phases. Sometimes you are going to absolutely nail the scent on the first test and then there are other times where you are going to have to take a step back and reconfigure what element is not working.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
The story behind how I put the initial capital needed for Socorra Rose is that I used the money I had saved up around the time of the pandemic. I knew that during the time I wanted to invest, but I didn’t think it would be in the lines of starting a new business. I would say it’s one of the best decisions that I made during the pandemic.
