Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tatiana Chamorro. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Tatiana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I came to the U.S. back in 2014 with my husband and our 2-year-old with the intention of him pursuing an MBA. We moved with 10 suitcases and our savings only covered 6 months of expenses.
As an immigrant, I fully understand the additional challenges and complexity involved in pursuing financial stability while at the same time trying to achieve your dreams. And sadly, one of the first things I found out was the massive gap in the number of Latinas who pursue entrepreneurship in the country. Ever since that moment, my mission became to be a force for change to close that gap. Therefore, I decided to volunteer as an ambassador for the Chamber of Commerce in Royse City and contribute to the founding efforts of the Women Empowered Group. Not so long after, I partnered with the Texas Association of Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) to offer a master class webinar series that aims to unlock business potential through digital marketing. And as for young entrepreneurs, I joined the advisory board at Venture College, the entrepreneurial HUB at A&M-Commerce, where I support and mentor students as a judge during their annual pitch competitions and have joined as a speaker multiple times to motivate students on their path to success.
Only 3 years after completing my master’s, my latest project includes a recent partnership with Texas A&M to launch a scholarship exclusively for minorities and underprivileged students, providing them with in-state tuition. Recently, I also have my own podcast called Mother Matriarchs which I host with my business partner/friend Karen Hite. Our purpose is to share our journey as business owners to motivate and inspire Latinas to take the leap of faith. After exiting my business just this year, I am planning on starting a non-profit called Sprout Collective, to specifically help WomenPreneurs to turn their vision into reality.
Tatiana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Tatiana Chamorro, originally from Nicaragua, I settled in Texas with my husband and young son in 2014. In the following years, I went on to graduate summa cum laude from Texas A&M-Commerce with a BA in Communications and an M.S. in Marketing.
As a mom of two (9 & 3 y/o) it has been hard to find other working moms and to feel like accomplishing certain career moves does not take away from me being a good mom. My extended family lives in Nicaragua, where civil unrest of a dictatorship erupted. It is very hard to navigate motherhood without my family here, but finding other mothers who navigate a similar path is something I look forward to.
In 2021, the opportunity arose to become owner-partner of Hite Digital Dallas, as well as Vice President & Co-Founder of Hite Creative. Hite Digital is an Inc.5000 digital marketing agency that empowers business owners from a variety of industries enhance their online presence which translates into more and better-quality leads. Another aspect of my career has to do with real estate, in which I co-founded a REI firm with my husband named Rivers-Partners.
Building up two successful companies in industries that are commonly male-dominated feels like I’ve shattered a glass ceiling, but my objective has always been to set an example for my children by leaving a positive footprint in my community.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The decision to move to the U.S. was met with skepticism from my family, who deemed it a crazy idea. According to them, my husband and I were too young and financially unprepared to face such a monumental challenge. We encountered countless naysayers who questioned our ability to achieve our dreams. Despite the doubts swirling around us, we pressed on.
My daily routine during that time was a juggling act of volunteering at events, networking, meeting with deans, studying, managing household chores, and being a mother. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed, and the thought of giving up crossed my mind. However, I always reminded myself that these sacrifices would pay off in the long run.
And indeed, the fruits of my work manifested themselves in remarkable ways. Through determination and hard work, I secured seven scholarships to pursue my undergraduate degree which I completed in 2017 with a 4.0 GPA. Subsequently, I pursued my master’s degree at Texas A&M-Commerce, also debt-free. The power of a strong will, can take you to places you never thought possible.
This experience allowed me to surpass the limitations that others imposed upon me and break free from the barriers that tried to hold me back. The obstacles and doubters only served to fuel my determination, transforming them into stepping stones toward success.
Looking back, I am immensely grateful for the challenges I faced, as they forged my resilience and fortified my character. They taught me to embrace adversity as an opportunity for growth and to never underestimate the strength of my own resolve. My entrepreneurial career has been built upon this unwavering spirit, and it continues to drive me forward, reminding me that no obstacle is impossible when met with determination and a strong belief in oneself.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My entrepreneurial journey didn’t unfold exactly as I had envisioned it several years ago, during my time pursuing a Master’s degree. While completing my Master’s , I co-founded MOCA, an app aimed at enhancing the relationship between physical therapists and their patients. However, despite our efforts, the app didn’t achieve the level of scalability we had hoped for. At this crossroad, many would have chosen the stability of a 9-to-5 job, but I knew deep down that wasn’t the path for me.
In 2020, amidst the challenging circumstances of a global pandemic, I made a bold decision to start a digital marketing agency. It seemed like the worst possible time to venture into the business world, with all odds stacked against me. Yet, I’ve always been drawn to defying the odds when I’m determined to achieve something. Transitioning into a completely different industry was undoubtedly tough, but my unwavering passion for marketing and design got me through this new chapter filled with uncertainty.
Long story short, my agency turned into a six-figure business in just six months. 3 years later I am exiting my first agency, and joining our corporate board, which leads our INC 5000 marketing agency, Hite Digital. How did I pull it off? By staying loyal to my mission, I always kept in my mind that my company would be the first step to somehow contribute to closing the gap in the small number of Latinas that make it into entrepreneurship.
