Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tatiana Carlos. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tatiana, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I began vocal lessons at the age of 10, learning the fundamentals of technique, breath control, and musicality. I later earned a degree in vocal performance from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and a master’s degree from Brigham Young University (USA), where I studied under exceptional voice teachers and coaches and participated in masterclasses with established opera singers. Alongside my formal training, I immersed myself in opera by attending performances, analyzing recordings, and performing in student productions.
Looking back, I wish I had focused more on language skills earlier, as mastering Italian, French, and German is essential for authentically interpreting opera repertoire.
The most critical skills for an opera singer include a strong technical foundation—proper breath support, vocal agility, and resonance—as well as musicality, emotional interpretation, and the ability to fully express one’s artistry. Discipline and resilience are also vital, as opera demands long hours of practice and the ability to handle rejection and criticism.
One of the biggest obstacles is the financial burden, as opera training and opportunities can be very costly. It can also be a lonely journey, requiring immense dedication and self-motivation.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a Brazilian soprano deeply passionate about my craft and dedicated to evolving as an artist while carving out my place in the opera world. My journey began with vocal lessons at the age of 10. I went on to earn a degree in vocal performance from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and a master’s degree from Brigham Young University (USA).
As an opera singer, I specialize in delivering powerful, emotionally resonant performances that bring classical repertoire to life. I strive to solve the challenge of connecting audiences to the depth and beauty of opera, making it accessible and moving for both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers alike. What sets me apart is my dedication to continuous growth, my commitment to mastering the technical and linguistic nuances of the art form, and my ability to convey genuine emotion through my voice.
I am most proud of the resilience and discipline I’ve developed to overcome obstacles in this demanding field. My goal is to inspire others through my artistry and to show that with passion, hard work, and perseverance, it’s possible to achieve one’s dreams.
To potential clients, followers, and fans, I want you to know that I pour my heart into every performance and am committed to sharing the transformative power of opera. My work is not just about singing—it’s about storytelling, connecting with people, and leaving a lasting impact through music.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the most defining moments of resilience in my career came just two months before the most significant professional debut of my life. I was involved in a severe car accident that nearly took my life. I suffered a deep cut to my head, a dislocated jaw, and a fractured coccyx. The timing couldn’t have been more challenging—I was preparing to become the first Brazilian singer to perform the role of Anna Bolena, a milestone I had worked tirelessly toward.
Despite the physical and emotional toll, I was determined not to let this setback define me. With the support of incredible doctors, physiotherapists, and psychologists, I underwent intense rehabilitation and therapy to recover both physically and mentally. It was an arduous journey, but my dedication to my craft and the dream of performing this iconic role kept me going.
Miraculously, I was able to make my debut as Anna Bolena, and it became the proudest moment of my professional career up to that point. This experience taught me the power of perseverance, the importance of a strong support system, and the ability to overcome even the most daunting obstacles. It reinforced my belief that with determination and passion, no challenge is insurmountable

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Society can support artists by valuing their work financially—buying tickets, artworks, or supporting crowdfunding campaigns—promoting their creations through social media, attending cultural events, and advocating for public policies that fund the arts. Recognizing art as essential, not optional, is key to sustaining artists and their contributions to culture.
