We were lucky to catch up with Tatiana Atkins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tatiana , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I went into massage school with the mindset that I would be a “witch doctor”, healing my people with the Earth. During my journey as a student, I began learning alternative practices to conventional medicine and finding out the healing ablilies our bodies posses when given the right conditions. I studied and researched and applied. Out of massage school I began creating body oils and scrubs that I would sell to my clients as well as started applying all that I learned within my own household. In the process of creating and trying natural remedies I began to come up with recipes for multiple self care products and started becoming the go to friend for natural remedies. Roughly 6 months after graduation I got a call from my dad stating he just found out he had stage 4 prostate cancer. He was afraid and crying and I let him know we would fight this together. I began sourcing information for him as well as herbs and other natural alternatives that would help him create the environment his body needed to thrive. He put his faith in my and his ability to make healthier choices and within 8 months he was in remission. This gave me a lot of confidence and strengthened our already strong bond. This successful healing process also sent a lot of people to me for information on how they could heal themselves from various ailments. I began making more self care products, empowering more people by providing them with information and motivating me to continue to learn as well as work on my own healthy lifestyle. I began selling the products online and in a local store as well as providing health and wellness consultations and creating custom holistic plans. Two years later I opened my own brick and mortar store and for the past 3 years I have been assisting people in my community with transitioning to a healthier lifestyle, boosting their quality of life and empowering them.
My advice to young professionals or anyone looking to start their own practice or open their own business is to start it now and perfect it later – don’t procrastinate on “the perfect moment” the moment could never be more perfect than now.

Tatiana , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an Afro-Carribean, mother of 8 and I create quality and effective natural self care products. I believe that self care is self love and our love for self is directly in correlation with our spiritual , emotional and physical health. I provide products and services that improve my clients wellbeing as well as empower them to make healthier decisions. I am proud of the men and women who were vulnerable with me to open up to their needs and goals as well as see them succeed in their own journey. I am proud of the people who take a chance on themselves to become more disciplined and have demonstrated the ability to heal themselves. I am proud of the people who decided to go after their dreams despite the societal norms snd expectations. Two of my favorite things to tell my clients are “Baby don’t allow things, situations or people to change who you are – out of fear of rejection because you bring to Earth what the world was missing!” & Don’t be afraid to break the mold, define what success means to YOU – it didn’t require a trillion of us to all inhabit Earth if we were all going to be the same, think the same, react the same… etc. You are unique and that matters, you matter, your health matters& you deserve to be seen, heard and thoroughly loved in your own love language.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During the duration my shop has been actively running, I have experienced severe water problems coming from above residential tenants which caused unexpected and extensive store closures and temporary loss of business. This has happened on numerous occasions yet I would use my down time to create or perfect my products. We have successfully thrived during the pandemic when most stores were closing as well as all the beautiful messages I receive from my clients and customers.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Yes, I truly believe the joy is in the work.
