We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tatiana and Justice. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tatiana and Justice below.
Tatiana and Justice, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Once the pandemic hit back in 2020 Jay and myself were looking for ways to continue to express ourselves creatively and an outlet we found was podcasting. We had a very basic knowledge of the podcast industry world but knew it was booming and the perfect way for us to come together as creatives to hold and share a space for others. Jan 2020 is the start of Words&Wine and has been a learning journey for us each and everyday. How we learned about how to start one, what equipment to buy, and the best hosting platforms to be on was simply researching and reading feedback from others. Youtube university was a big help when trying to learn something new and definitely a platform we used often.
Outside of the world wide web we also had some good friends of ours that had started their own podcast and got some tips and tricks from peers as well. Knowing the process now having to go through some challenging moments I think having everything ready at once verses trying to build as you go could’ve speed up the learning process for us. For example, investing in all of the equipment at once before starting so you have good mics, lighting, camera etc. Key skills going into an industry like this I would say is knowing about sound, and video editing skills will be a huge help. The obstacle for us that may stand in the way of us learning more sometimes is time, the fact we don’t just podcast full time and work a normal 9 -5 sometimes we don’t always have available time. At the end of day, we enjoy what we do and even though time and resources may not always be on our side we are proud of the work that has been produced so far.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Words & Wine is a podcast created by two lifelong friends (Justice Tatum and Tatiana Young) that thrive at the intersection of self development and creative expression. Our goal is to share our diverse experiences while providing as much value and awareness to our community of listeners. We got into this industry two months before the world shut down which was a perfect transition for us as we were hosting live events in the community and wanted to still hold a space in our “new world” which podcasting allowed.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In our view society as a whole can be better at supporting artists, creatives and an thriving creative ecosystem by taking the time to learn about there community of people. Sharing information about their business or services whether that be word of mouth and or social media. It’s all free to do and helps bring awareness to that person or community of people. Being active in your community to see what is out there and what people are doing to try to support any way you can. Being mindful of what you buy, where you shop and how you spend your money. This will make you more aware of how your dollar is being spent and usually has a greater impact when its a person from your community you are supporting. At the end of the day we are all here to be a services to one another and we all have to help each other!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is the freedom to express and to show up exactly the person you are or want to be. Another rewarding piece, is it’s something you own or you are producing so it makes it 100 times more special when its something you love and passion about. Also it allows you to show layers of yourself that many people may have never known about you or took the time to know. Most importantly, being able to show up as your true authentic self is always the most rewarding part of anything you do!
