We recently connected with Tatá Batera and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Tatá thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about one of the craziest things you’ve experienced in your journey so far.
In June of 2022, I came back from Brazil, after my sister’s wedding, straight to a tour of 2,5 months with The Red Elvises. The band picked me up at the LAX airport and we started the tour in the USA. I was super excited and happy because I could spent a month in Brazil with my family. In the first week of the tour, I fell down the stairs of the stage and sprained my right ankle (the most important foot for a drummer). I never felt such a pain in my life, even though I have a high pain tolerance. I couldn’t go to see a doctor because we were in Montana and I didn’t have a health insurance at the time. I had to deal with the pain only with ice and some pain killers that my bandmates gave me. Besides, we had to do the second part of the show, and I couldn’t’ play all the notes I was supposed to. After the show I cried a lot. I couldn’t believe that was happening to me. It was a nightmare, and the tour was just beginning! Having to set and play the drums almost everyday seemed to me almost impossible but my only choices were: to face it or give up. I chose to face it, and with my bandmates’ help I could do the whole tour. I still can’t believe I made it! For sure, this experience made me stronger.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a professional drummer from Brazil and I’ve been living in LA since the fall of 2019. I’m known as a versitile drummer having worked with Brazilian, Latin, jazz, reaggae, funk, rock, surf rock and many other styles. I’m proud to be a full time musician and to always do my best for music!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Besides of how good I feel when I’m playing the drums, I think the interaction with the audience is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist. Is amazing to see people’s face while I’m playing and to see that they are having fun and feeling the music. A famous composer from Brazil called Milton Nascimento wrote a song and this line”every artist needs to go where the people are” always pops-up to me and makes me think: this is my life and my joy!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I think being a good drummer with a good understanding of music and all that is inside the music helped me to build my reputation in the market. Even though I’m a foreigner, I manage to live here as a full time musician because people recognize my talent and hard work.
