We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tasia Henderson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tasia , thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
The story of St. James TMS & Psychiatry began with a vision rooted deeply in both purpose and legacy.
As a dual-certified psychiatric and family nurse practitioner, I often found myself navigating a healthcare system that too frequently separated the mind from the body, treating symptoms in isolation rather than addressing the whole person. I knew there had to be a better way.
Starting my own practice was not a decision I made lightly. It required courage, clarity, and a commitment to building something from the ground up. The name St James’ was chosen intentionally in honor of my father, James Henderson, whose quiet strength and enduring faith continue to guide me, even after his passing. He was the kind of person who saw potential in others before they saw it in themselves. That spirit became the foundation of my practice.
In the early days, the steps were both practical and deeply personal. I had to secure credentials across multiple states, navigate telehealth regulations, choose the right electronic health records platform, and build out workflows that could support evidence-based, patient-centered care. I also had to hire the right team—people who understood that we were not just managing medications but holding space for healing.
One of the greatest challenges was creating a system that upheld clinical excellence while also remaining flexible, accessible, and deeply human. Insurance compliance, scheduling systems, branding, and marketing were all new territories for me. There were moments of doubt, but each challenge reaffirmed my “why.” I wanted to offer care that was thoughtful, culturally attuned, and integrative—bridging the physical and emotional, the medical and the mindful.
If I could do one thing differently, I would have invested sooner in a strong operations team and allowed myself to delegate more in the beginning. As clinicians, we often try to do everything ourselves. But building something sustainable requires trust in your vision and in the people who help you carry it forward.
To any young professional considering starting their own practice: Begin with your “why.” Your mission is your compass. Stay grounded in your purpose, but be flexible in your path. Know that you will wear many hats—but you don’t have to wear them all at once or alone. Build your network, ask for help, and invest in systems early that allow you to focus on what only you can do: caring for your patients with integrity and compassion.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Dr. Tasia Henderson, a dual-certified Family and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
and the founder of ST James TMS & Psychiatry, a telepsychiatry practice grounded in holistic,
patient-centered care. My journey into healthcare began with a passion for understanding how the
mind and body interact-and how healing both can lead to true wellness. Over time, that passion
evolved into a calling to create a space where mental health care is accessible, personal, and
deeply rooted in dignity, cultural humility, and clinical excellence.
St James TMS & Psychiatry was born out of that vision. The name “St James” is both a nod to
healing and a tribute to my late father, James Henderson, whose strength, faith, and compassion
continue to inspire the work I do today. Our practice currently serves patients across New York, New
Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Oregon, and Minnesota, and we provide comprehensive psychiatric
evaluations, medication management, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for
treatment-resistant depression, and soon, medical cannabis certifications.
What sets us apart is our deep commitment to connecting the mind and body while acknowledging
the complexity of every person’s life story. We treat a wide range of conditions-depression, anxiety,
OCD, ADHD, trauma, and mood disorders-through a lens that is not only clinically sound but also
highly personal. Patients are never “just a number” here. They are listened to, guided, and
empowered.
We also strive to address the often invisible barriers that keep people from receiving care. Whether
About Dr. Tasia Henderson & St James TMS & Psychiatry
it’s the stigma surrounding mental health, lack of provider diversity, or limited access to
evidence-based treatments, St James TMS & Psychiatry seeks to be a solution. We are proudly
virtual-first, ensuring convenience and accessibility while maintaining the highest standard of care.
What I’m most proud of is creating a space where patients feel seen, safe, and supported. Whether
it’s a young adult navigating anxiety, a mother struggling with postpartum depression, or a
professional seeking clarity on ADHD, I’m honored to walk alongside them in their healing journey.
For those just getting to know me or my practice, I want you to know this: you are not alone, and
healing is possible. My work is fueled by empathy, backed by science, and shaped by lived
experience. At Saint James, we believe in transforming lives-one thoughtful, intentional visit at a
time.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
In psychiatry and mental health, emotional presence, humility, and resilience are just as essential as formal education. This work is deeply human. Every patient brings a unique story, often layered with trauma, culture, family history, and societal stressors. To truly succeed, you must be willing to listen without judgment, adapt without ego, and advocate without burnout. It’s the ability to sit with discomfort, honor each person’s lived experience, and still show up fully even on the hard days that makes the difference.
Also, building trust is everything. No treatment plan, no matter how evidence-based, can work without a foundation of trust. That means being consistent, transparent, and leading with empathy in every interaction.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Absolutely, without hesitation. I would choose this profession again and again. Psychiatry allows me to combine science, storytelling, and service in a way that feels both intellectually stimulating and soulfully fulfilling. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing transformation not just symptom improvement, but true healing and there is no greater reward.
If anything, I might have started my private practice sooner. Building St James TMS & Psychiatry gave me the autonomy to create care models that reflect my values, honor my patients’ realities, and deliver mental health care that is personal, accessible, and impactful. Knowing that I built a space rooted in integrity and inspired by my father’s legacy makes the work even more meaningful.
