Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tashia Mayo. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Tashia , thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My mother has always encouraged me to speak up and share my testimony with the world. My transparency is a result of having a humble and understanding mother. No matter what mistakes I’ve made or hardships I’ve encountered, my mother reminds me that it’s all a part of life. No one is immune to issues, embarrassment, hardships, or mistakes. Some people suffer in silence and remain silent once they’ve won their battles and overcame their obstacles. My mother has also encouraged me to hold my head high and be the voice for people who will/has experienced similar situations as I have. Growing up, I always witnessed my mother telling her life stories to whoever would listen. Her spirit would move her to speak on certain situations in certain settings and they always seemed to be of relevance to the people/person she told them to. She was never embarrassed or too prideful to talk about the struggles she has encountered. I’ve witnessed so many people tell her how her story has helped them. These experiences taught me how powerful being open about my trails and tribulations in life could be. The thing my mother did right was teach me to be transparent, humble, and a voice for those who are afraid or unable to speak. As a result, I am able to help people overcome their toughest battles by being transparent and letting them know they are not alone.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Tashia Mayo. I’m a 22 year soldier in the U.S. Army, spoken word poet, motivational speaker, actor, radio personality, rapper, published author, and senior at the University of Central Arkansas. I started doing poetry at the age of 12. My first performance ended with me crying and a standing ovation from a crowd of over 300 people. Since then, I’ve been performing all over the U.S. The rest of my talents began to unfold as I got deeper into the creative world. I first took on the role as a radio personality for victory fm radio at the age of 15. I’ve graced the stages of many different colleges such as the University of Georgia. A key element in all that I do is transparency, I can’t stress it enough. The reason I am able to write, speak and perform as passionately as I do is because I am not afraid to leave everything in the hands of my audience. The beauty of poetry is it helps you express emotions that would be hard to speak about in a regular conversation. With the help of literary devices and public speaking skills I am able to leave all my burdens on the stage. Above all, I am a poet.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the feedback from my audience/listeners. Most of the time, the feedback is super emotional. It’s very common for people to come up to me after a performance and tell me how I described their situation in my poetry. I’ve learned that people love to know that others go through the same struggles as them. It makes them feel like they are not alone, like someone understands.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by posting consistently and interacting with my followers. Oftentimes, we become complacent and stop giving our followers the content that lead them to our pages. Interacting with followers on social media helps you produce content that they actually want. Not saying everything has to align with the demands of your followers but it’s good to take heed to their wants.
