We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tasheka Washington. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tasheka below.
Tasheka, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Curvy Girl Dreams Boutique actually started as Curvy Girl Dreams. I wanted a platform that would allow curvy men and women to freely express themselves. My passion for fashion and frustrations surrounding our limited availability of fashionable clothing birthed the boutique.
I’ve always been someone that pushed the limits with the things I wear. If you feel sexy and confident, no one should be able to tell you what’s appropriate for you. I wanted to provide that outlet with the clothes I offer. I also wanted to give the full body positive experience that isn’t always highlighted in our community. I am my customers, that’s how I knew this would work. We will always need someone to advocate for our freedom, peace, happiness and fashion.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Tasheka Washington and I am the owner of Curvy Girl Dreams Boutique, Curvy Girl Dreams Boutique is an online curvy boutique that specializes in sizes 1x-3x. Our main goal is provide a body positive experience at an affordable price. We pride ourselves on helping our clients foster healthy self confidence while building a fierce wardrobe.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I actually started my boutique during a time that I had taken a break from my full time job. I’m a substance abuse and mental health therapist and I was drained. I was blessed enough to take several months off and use my savings to start the store. I ordered my first line, which was for the winter and worked on my Shopify store. I was so excited and extremely nervous. I’ve used any money from sales to put back into the store. I also self fund the store as well. It’s for sure difficult but it’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make, while building my brand.
How’d you think through whether to sell directly on your own site or through a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc.
My boutique is through Shopify. Everything can be found at curvygirldreamsboutique.com. I like that I can control the ins and outs of my website with Shopify. I am fully hands on being that I am the one who runs the site. I don’t like that the price continues to rise and there are times that there are glitches with the site. For me, an online boutique works better. I’m able to do handle everything in one location.
