We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tasharra Dawson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tasharra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
I’ve had several mentors and influential bosses throughout my career. I like to think I’m a sponge, and learn as much as I can from the people God puts in my life. I once worked at a CPA office and I loved it! The people was great, the position was easy, I loved seeing and meeting the clients. I started to feel like I had purpose again, not so low anymore.. hopeful! At the time my personal life sucked, my relationship was failing and I had developed bad anxiety issues after losing my job previously. I just felt like I was failing as a “female” losing my femininity. Working at the CPA office was so inspiring it became distracting. I had already graduated from esthetics school and had one day hoped to own my spa business. At this particular office we specialized in new businesses. I saw all types of business owners come in to start or maintain their businesses. It was so inspiring, local people, beauty industry people, minority people making a difference in the community. I began dreaming evening bigger about my studio. Conversing about it none stop, planning, and organizing thoughts to open my own studio. After about two months I got fired, i literally cried! I never got fired before and I loved it there. She told me to open my own business and she’ll be my mentor, so that’s what I did.
Tasharra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tasharra Dawson and I am the Owner of The Dollhouse Boutique. I specialize in Organic Skincare and Body Conturing, After years of struggling to find Skincare Products that treated common troublesome skin issues (Dry Skin, Eczema,Acne) instead of causing further irritation,I took matters into my own hands. While studying business at North Carolina A&T University I began researching and exploring Natural Skincare Remedies. 8 years, an Esthetician License and hours of experimentation later, I have been able to Handcraft an Organic Skincare Line, and Open & Operate a Day Spa Specializing in Face & Body Treatments.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth! Definitely the best form of marketing thus far. I honestly don’t know if anything else works. One time someone tried to scam me into some hotel marketing partnership scheme. I didn’t fall for it but I was upset after not getting a deal.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
After COVID . . . I’m still here after Covid.. yay!
