We were lucky to catch up with Tashana Frink recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tashana, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
In July 2020, I did a lot of self-reflection. The pandemic forced me to sit and remain still and reevaluate some important things in my life. I realized that I wanted to create a resource for children that would help them be successful with their education. Tashana’s Tutoring Program is a program that tackles deficits within reading and math for children in grades Pre-K through 8. Over the past 2 years, my team and I have serviced around 40 children in Baltimore, New York and Atlanta. Once I saw the success of the tutoring program, I knew it was time to build Tashana Frink as a brand. My next project was creating a children’s book on my son. The book is tilted “Kai Goes to Pop-Pop and GiGi’s House”. The book is based on my son’s adventure at his grandparent’s house. This book was important to me because I wanted to show people the positive influence grandparents have on their grandchild. As of today, my book has sold over 150 copies. My most recent project is Educational Learning Binders that support children in ages 2 through 4. The purpose of these binders is to prepare children for school. The binders contain numbers, shapes, colors, patterns, weather, etc. These binders are super helpful for parents who want additional skills for their children. My mission is to continue to create learning resources and provide services that will support black children and black families all around the world.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
During the pandemic, I was sitting at home brainstorming on ideas to help not only the children, but parents as well during these unprecedented times. I created the Tutoring Program because I wanted to help close the educational gap that children were facing because of the pandemic. I also wanted to provide convenience for parents who were looking for some extra help. By the Tutoring Program being online, parents do not have to travel for their children to receive services. They can experience the program from the comfort of their homes.
Once the Tutoring Program was established, I realized it was the perfect time to create a children’s book. I started the process October of 2020, and it was completed by October 2021. The book is titled, “Kai Goes to Pop-Pop & GiGi’s House”. The book is about my son, Kai, and his adventure at his grandparent’s house. I believe it is extremely important to show that it takes a village to help raise children.
Being an entrepreneur while having a full-time career has it challenges. I am an Assistant Principal in Baltimore City Public Schools, so I have to make sure I make time to promote both the Tutoring Program and the children’s book on the consistent basis. While I try to do so much on my own, I found the importance of hiring a team to assist in building my brand. I believe it is very important to hire a team to make sure that you are effectively executing and marketing to all groups of people.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I currently sell my resources and services on my website TashanaFrink.com. I chose to sell on my website and not other platforms at this time because I wanted to control my sales, and manage my inventory from beginning to end, even with packaging and shipping it to customers. Upon running an analysis on different options for shipping, it was best for me to actually ship to customers.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I hired a Project Manager, Maya Owens, who consistently creates monthly content for me on Social Media. She tells me when to post and she creates my captions as well to make sure that I am fully engaged with my audience. I would tell anyone who is building a social media presence to hire someone who is great and sufficient in that area because they will make sure you are persistently showing up on social media and putting the correct image out there for your brand.
