Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tashalle Lalor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tashalle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
I currently manage my social media platforms. It is quite difficult sometimes because hair isn’t my full-time job. Having more then one job sometimes puts me behind due to me being so busy working so much that I’m overly worked or overly tired. There would be times where I wouldn’t post for days which to me I find that slows down the growth of the business. If I do continue to have more then one job I do find myself considering hiring someone to manage my social media. You have to do what works best for you and the growth of your business.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi my name is Tashalle Lalor and I am a 28 year old self-taught hairstylist from Toronto, ON. I always had a passion for doing my own hair since I was in high school. I would try different styles on myself from ponytails to quick weaves to eventually traditional sew-ins. Eventually I started grasping a small clientele which grew every year and eventually my love for hair grew fonder leading to me starting my business Laloure Hair & Co. in 2018. The name of my business came to me in a dream and was confirmed when a friend said she felt my business name should be called the same exact name I dreamed of. I provide different types of services such as, custom wig making, frontal and closure wig applications, traditional sew-ins, ponytails, tape-ins and micro-links. I also offer wig making and wig application classes where beginners or advance students can come in and learn how to make custom units as well the proper way to apply a lace frontal. I see my business constantly evolving, I’m always finding ways to better my skills as well as offer new services to the public. One thing I can say is that I don’t try to be more than I need to be. I move at my own pace and I am my genuine self I believe in good customer service making my customers and clients always feel warm and welcoming and able to be open with anything regards to their hair, which keeps them coming back and the slay they leave the chair with obviously. I am proud of how far my business has come the blood, sweat and tears are paying off and its showing. And there is so much more growth to come for Laloure Hair & Co. stay tune.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
CONSISTENCY! When a client goes on a stylist page they want to see that the stylist is consistent whether it be in their work, their product usage or simply their professionalism/ customer service. They want to know what they see is what they are more then likely to get. This also builds up a level of trust and comfort between you and the client resulting in them coming back as well as referring you to others. Also when your consistent with your posting and content it draws an audience and potential new clients. Lastly the banging hair they leave with each and every time they come in that lasts them a while before having to take it out.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing I had to unlearn was you don’t have to be devoted to your business 24/7 we are allowed to take a break and make time for ourselves. Running a business takes up almost 90% of our lives we get so consumed in making sure everything is running smoothly and at its best, resulting in us putting ourselves last majority of the time. I use to work morning straight to night no breaks not even a chance to eat, literally neglecting myself. Best believe I had to learn the hard way my health started to take a toll constant headaches from lack of sleep, cyst growing in my hand from the constant movement and straining, the pain in my feet from the standing all day it was really bad. As business owners we need to understand how important self-care is how important it is to take a break every now and then and just relax put the business on hold. Neglecting yourself can result in you losing yourself and best believe it will show through the business. You can’t give your business your all if you, yourself is not at your best physically, emotionally and mentally.
