We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful TaShala Greer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with TaShala below.
TaShala, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To me success is being remembered for how many lives I’ve touched and not how much money I’ve made.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is TaShala Greer but I’m known by many as Shala. My photography business Shala Shyree’ Photography was birthed in the midst of the Pandemic when I craved for some creativity. From childhood, I’ve always loved photography and film so intensely, for I found joy in it. My passions motivated me to pivot a professional career from law enforcement in Ohio to Atlanta where I pursued a higher education studying television and film at Savannah College of Art and Design. After college, I pursued a production career working on sets of several movies, television shows and national commercials. Additionally, I gained further experience working at broadcasting and advertising companies, which furthered my love for photography.
In describing myself, I would say I’m one of a huge heart, doling out love (and sometimes free sessions) without ever expecting anything in return. I value my creativity and passions fiercely. Known as a perfectionist, I take my time with my craft to make sure each client walks away feeling wow’d. What sets me apart, is being able to go from your photographer to a friend. I’ve met friends through sessions just by being my warm bubbly self and being a listening ear. I strongly feel my camera has healing powers! That is what I’m most proud of, and also knowing one day I will be remembered for the lives I’ve touched.
Shala Shyree Photography specializes in capturing any occasion; weddings, family portraits, maternity, newborn, high end fashion, business to lifestyle shoots.
I currently reside in Maryland with my Husband Erick and our precious baby girl, Zaya. We do travel for photography, as I’m a traveling enthusiast!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Since I’ve started my photography business two years ago, I’ve had two major surgeries that’s taken a toll on me emotionally, mentally and physically. Some days I don’t even have the energy to engage, but I keep pushing through. because this is what brings me joy. Thanks to my wonderful clients, they’ve been super supportive and flexible when I’ve had to be the one to reschedule.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
It’s a beautiful thing when people can rewrite or recast their story at any given moment. That’s very true for my journey, as I started out as a correctional officer at a max security prison at the tender age of 20. A very hard and complex time in my life when I was trying to figure out my life’s purpose. I was so unhappy and miserable. I needed direction. I remember praying and crying out to God on what I should be doing. At 24 I made the bold decision to pack up my car with nothing but my clothes and moved to Atlanta GA with no plan in site. As I was driving on the highway I noticed Savannah College of Art and Design and decided to take a tour. From there, the rest was history and I began my creative career.
