We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tasha Thomas. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tasha below.
Tasha, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned how to dye yarn how I learned most of my creative adventures, a combination of Pinterest and You Tube scrolling.
I wished I had known about the local fiber guild in my area that offered classes on the art of hand dyeing yarn and had become a member sooner rather than later.
There is a good amount of science involved in the process of dyeing yarn as well as color theory.
My biggest obstacle that has stood in my way is the lack of physical space I currently have for my studio. I work in a small area which doesn’t allow for a lot of experimenting on a large scale.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started my love with yarn by learning how to crochet. I wanted to make blankets for my parents for Christmas and a good friend of mine who rode the bus with me daily taught me the techniques.
After getting hooked on that I decided to try my hand selling my items at local craft shows. Along the way I found myself dabbling in yarn dyeing. On a whim I brought some of my dyed yarn to a local craft show that I was vending and the overall response was amazing. At that point I knew this was the path I was to take.
I love all avenues of the fiber world and try to offer fibers for all people. Weather you are a crocheter, knitter, weaver or some other line of fiber artist I am thankful to be able to provide a source for their yarn needs.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Since an early age I have always wanted to own my own business and to work only for myself. While the road has been long this goal is still the driving force behind my desire to strive for and one day be a full time fiber artist.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
People need to realize that what artists are creating is not something mass produced by machines. But something that in some cases a single individual is creating with their own two hands and the skill set that they have worked on for some time. And with that respect the monetary value the artist places on the items they create.
I understand not everyone may be able to afford some of the art in which they see, but they can support the artist other ways, such as following, liking and posting about artists that they like and telling others about them.
