We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tasha Roberts a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tasha, thanks for joining us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
We have been experiencing 100% growth year over year since 2022.
I would attribute that growth to a multitude of strategies. We stepped up our marketing game. We invested heavily into our website, Google presence, and re-branding. I also started focusing on hiring the right people, that share our company core values and vision. With the right people on your team, you can accomplish anything!
With growth, also comes great challenges. Growing 100% year over year lead to operational issues, needing to create new roles that did not previously exist and creating processes around absolutely everything. Those processes have contributed to the growth as well. Everyone on the team needs to be rowing in the same direction.
Tasha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I entered the construction/trades industry unexpectantly.
I was working in the finance sector (Corporate America lifestyle) which is quite the opposite of the world that I live in today.
I took over this company in 2016, when my parents (who started this company in 1999) were in a motorcycle accident. While, by the grace of God, they are still with us today – they can no longer work.
In 2022, I became 100% owner and since then have been implementing new marketing and technology to aggressively grow ASAP Commercial Doors. In 2022, my family and I moved to North Carolina where we opened our second division.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Hiring too fast!
In our times of growth, I made some poor decisions on hiring and promoting internally. I made decisions our of desperation. In turn, it cost us more than if I would have just taken the time to hire the correct team members. Hiring and recruiting is everything.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I contribute our strong reputation to many inputs:
-Strong rebrand with nice truck wraps
-Social media presence
-Always striving for 5 star reviews from clients
-Always providing great service where clients trust us and refer us to friends
