Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Tasha Daniels. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Tasha, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I started my business Coily Products, LLC in Florida in 2019, due to Covid-19 shutting down the local markets I was no longer able to go there on weekends to physically sell my products. I ended up transitioning to Houston and being stuck in my corporate job being unhappy and wanting to start my business again but not knowing how to. Then one day I started doing locs for myself and my friends, I had someone tell me that I did so good I needed to provide my talent to others. After that, just like my products had done after great friend reviews, my loc service business exploded! I used very inexpensive tactics to market myself, my business, my talents, and my knowledge. From that point on I made it my mission to serve as many people as I could.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Tasha Daniels knows about passion. She knows how important finding it can be, and she considers herself lucky to have found her’s. Tasha knows how important it can be to someone because, in her case, finding her passion started her career as an entrepreneur and changed her life forever. Before starting her business, Coily Products, Tasha and her son were in a homeless shelter, all while She was pregnant with her second child. While there, she started making hair products, primarily out of necessity. The realization of how well they worked came later, but the idea had taken root.
Today, Coily Products consists of a product line and a beauty service called CP Beauty Studios. While her original idea was to sell products exclusively, Tasha realized she could further her clientele reach with direct service and opened a studio after Covid restrictions began to lift. Since then, people have been booking rapidly nonstop for her loc services.
Tasha has since expanded into teaching what she’s learned. A one-on-one masterclass is available for clients who want a more personal touch. Still, she’s also written an Ebook about marketing on a budget helping aspiring entrepreneurs, and a “how to” course for dreadlocks for those who want to learn from her expertise. To quote Tasha, “Through all the adversities of being in a homeless shelter and being a single parent, I was able to use my talents to overcome. As a result, I can now provide for my family by running my own business. Teaching others how I did that is my passion.”
Most successful entrepreneurs will tell people to “find their passion.” They understand the critical idea that when passion meets business, it will drive a person to heights they never dreamed possible. Tasha Daniels and Coily Products are a model of this idea. For Tasha, finding her passion meant a way out of that homeless shelter. Finding her passion meant saving her life. Now that she’s found it, she’s determined to utilize it to give others the tools necessary to save their own – one appointment at a time.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
In 2019 selling hair care products was just a side hustle, I never imagined that I’d be here now in 2023 not only still being able to offer products but also being a full-time entrepreneur. Providing for my family from something that I have grown from a side hustle to a business is something that I consider to be one of my biggest achievements. I literally started with no clients, I used the inexpensive methods that are in my E-Book, Marketing on a Budget, to grow my clientele as well as keep the clientele. One of the best ways that I have used to keep my clientele not only coming back but referring their friends is by offering them hair knowledge. At my studio it’s not about just getting you in for a wash, retwist, and style, it’s about building rapport, getting to know what your hair goals are, and teaching you what the do’s and don’ts of natural hair care is. The clients that come to me consistently see growth in their hair as well as their knowledge of how to maintain a healthy crown. Aside from going from side hustle to business owner, my biggest milestone and achievement was being able to land on tv, radio, and print interviews with some of the largest names out there, Fox news being one, I literally never imagined my small side hustle going from a small brand I started in a shelter, to a nationwide brand and a well-known hair studio in Houston!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I carry resilience in my back pocket in mass amounts! since the 2018–2019 time frame if it was for hard work, dedication, and resilience I would not have been able to get to the point that I am now. I remember there being a time when I didn’t have a car, but I had two children whose well-being depended on me being able to get certain errands done attending job interviews and getting them out of a shelter where we were not made to feel welcome because of our skin color. I had to ride a bicycle to a job fair, and the route I had to take was on a busy road, I had to be there by a certain time, and with all of the other errands I had to complete that day, I was running behind, with me rushing down the road I completely flipped off of the bike. even with me being in excruciating pain, I was able to think that I had a bigger reason as to why I needed to get to that job fair! it wasn’t about me and how I felt, It was about the little people in my life and needing to fulfill their needs. I picked myself up and made it to the job fair with time to spare. When things get tough for me in my entrepreneurial journey I think about that moment when I remember how we had less than we had then than we do now, and I am able to pick myself up and keep going for my children. I am able to be a duck in water and let all obstacles roll off of my back.
